This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006) GM Chevrolet Tahoe SUV in changing burnt out dome or "rear passenger reading" light bulbs above the 2nd row of seats.

Owners of other General Motors GMT800 series SUV or truck vehicles such as the Chevy Silverado, Suburban, Avalanche, GMC Yukon, Sierra, Hummer H2 and the Cadillac Escalade may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

Replacement bulbs are part number 578 which are available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, PIAA and Eiko. You can also use a compatible 578 LED unit.

I recommend the Sylvania 578 light bulb.

The only tool needed to change the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry open the hinged lens cover.

Swing Open Hinged Cover
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to wrap the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth.

Insert the tip of the flathead screwdriver in to the notch on the left (driver) side of the lens cover.

Gently pry out the left side of the lens cover and swing it open to the right.

The hinged lens cover will remain attached to the housing.

Old # 578 Bulb
If the old bulb was recently turned on, be careful since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.

Gently Pop In Lens Cover
Push a new # 578 bulb straight in to the socket.

If you would like to have brighter cargo area lights, install some compatible replacement festoon style 578 LED bulbs.

Tip - If you are installing an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try flipping it around in the socket.

Swing the hinged lens cover closed from the right side over to the left.
