This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) Honda Pilot SUV in changing a burnt out cargo area light bulb in the tailgate door.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Civic, Crosstour, CR-V, CR-Z, Fit, Insight, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, ILX, TSX, TLX, TL, RLX, RDX, NSX and MDX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement festoon style light bulb part number is DE3022, which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Maxell, PIAA and Eiko.

If you want brighter cargo area lights, choose a DE3022 LED.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulb is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic trim panel removal tool.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic trim panel removal tool.

Insert the blade of the screwdriver in to one of the four small notches on the top or bottom edge of the lens cover.

Gently pry out the lens cover. You may need to re-insert the screwdriver in to another notch to fully remove it.

Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

Old Light Bulb Removed
If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it from the socket. It might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.
