This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the eleventh generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018)
Toyota Corolla in cleaning or changing the A/C system's cabin air
filter element in the HVAC blower motor housing. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles such as the Yaris, Matrix, Prius, Camry, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement cabin air filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram CF10285, TYC 800025P, K&N VF2000, Wix 24483, Denso # 453-1019, Toyota 87139-07020, Beck Arnley 042-2082, Mahle Original LAK 490, Pentius PHB5667, Purolator C35667, Bosch P3502WS, ACDelco CF3320C or CF173, GKI CF1157, Beck Arnley 042-2189, OEM CAF146P, Toyota 87139-07020 and Champion CCF1816. No tools are needed to access and replace the cabin air filter. |

Pull Off Damper Arm |
Popped Off Mounting Peg |
Firmly Push In Side Walls |
The first few steps
are to sit in the front passenger seat of the car, open the glove box and
then empty out the contents. Locate the glove box dampener arm on the right outer side wall. Gently pull the glove box damper arm off the two prongs at the end of its plastic mounting peg. |
||
Release Plastic Side Stops |
Lower Glove Box To Floor |
HVAC Blower Motor |
Firmly push in the two side walls of the glove box until the plastic side stoppers can be removed from behind the dashboard. Gently lower the glove box down to the passenger floor mat. Once the glove box is out of the way, you'll be able to see the black plastic HVAC blower motor housing. |
||
Push In Release Tab On Right |
Swing Open Filter Cover |
"Up" Arrow - Filter Cover |
Push in the small
tab on the right side of the glove box access panel before swinging it open. Pull the tab on the left side of the filter access cover out of its slot. Set the filter cover aside in a safe place. (Notice that the filter cover has an "Up" arrow to help you re-install it correctly.) |
||
Filter Cover Removed |
Old Filter In Slot |
Slide Out Old Filter |
Slide the old cabin air filter straight out of the slot. | ||
|
||
Inspect Both Sides |
Empty Filter Slot |
Clean With Vacuum |
Inspect both sides
of the old cabin air filter. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with pollen, dirt, dust, hair, insects, leaves, twigs, soot and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I'd recommend buying the Fram CF10285 since it has great reviews on Amazon. I also like how it has Arm & Hammer baking soda and carbon to keep the A/C system from smelling musty or moldy. |
||
Slide In New Cabin Filter |
Air Flow "Up" Arrow |
Tab & Slot On Left |
Orientate the new
filter with the "Up" air flow arrow pointing up towards the windshield. Slide the new filter in to the slot. Line up the filter cover with the "UP" arrow pointing in the correct direction. Re-insert the tab on the left side of the cover in to its corresponding slot on the left side of the filter slot. |
||
Swing Closed Right Side |
Push To Secure Retaining Clip |
Filter Cover Replaced |
Swing the filter
cover closed towards the right side of the opening. Push on the right side of the filter access cover to secure the retaining clip. Double check that the filter cover is secure before moving on to the next steps. |
||
Raise Glove Box To Dash |
Push On Damper Arm |
Damper Arm Secured |
Raise the glove box
towards the dashboard. Move to the right outer side wall and gently push the glove box dampener arm back on to its mounting peg. |
||
Firmly Push In Side Walls |
Re-Insert Side Stoppers |
Close Glove Box |
Firmly push in the
two side walls of the glove box until the plastic side stops can be
re-inserted behind the dashboard. Replace the contents of the glove box and close it to complete the job. Enjoy the fresh clean air from your A/C system! For more, check out my other
