This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically created to assist owners of the first generation (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006) Acura MDX in changing burnt out dome light bulbs (also known as the rear passenger courtesy reading lights) or upgrade them both to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Acura or Honda vehicles such as the RDX, ILX, TLX, RLX, TL, CL, RSX, RL, TSX, ZDX, NSX, Integra, Pilot, Accord, Civic, Fit, Clarity, CR-V, CR-Z, HR-V, Odyssey, Element  and Ridgeline may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb is part number 2825 (also known as W5W).

You can also choose to install brighter 2825 LED units.

The only tool needed to access and change the light bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Use Wire Loop Trick
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, I recommend either covering the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or use a plastic trim panel removal tool.

Insert the blade of the screwdriver in between the edge of the lens cover and the overhead housing.

Gently pry out the lens cover.

You may need to re-insert the lens cover in more than one place to fully remove it.

Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily.

There is a plastic tab at the rounded outer edge of each lens cover and two retaining clips closer to the middle of the housing.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Grasp the old light bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out.

If you have trouble removing the old light bulb, try using a loop of stiff wire to pull it out or put on a latex rubber glove for extra grip.

The OEM light bulb is a miniature wedge base # 2825.

Line Up Lens Cover
Push a new light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have brighter dome lights, install some compatible 2825 LED units.

Test the new light bulb by pressing the translucent plastic "On/Off" button.

Line up the lens cover with the light housing.

Testing Dome Lights
Re-insert the plastic tab on the outer edge of the lens cover back into the housing.

Then gently snap in the two retaining clips closer to the middle of the housing.

Test the new dome lights by pressing on the indentation near the outer edge of the lens covers to activate the "On/Off" switches.
