This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & possibly also the 2016 model year) Dodge Challenger in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead console or upgrading both bulbs to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Chrysler, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Town & Country, 300, 200, Avenger, Charger, Journey, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan, and Ram C/V Tradesman minivan may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement "festoon" or "fuse" style map light bulb is part number 578 which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some compatible 578 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry out the plastic lens cover.

Gently Pry Out Metal Cover
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or use a plastic automotive panel pry tool.

Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in between the lens cover and the overhead console near the front edge (closest to the windshield).

Gently pry out the two plastic retaining clips and remove the lens cover.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

Gently pry out the metal cover from the housing.

Gently Pry Out Old Bulb
Set the metal cover aside in a safe place.

If the old bulb was recently illuminated, be careful since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Carefully pull out the old bulb with your fingers or pry out one of the metal end caps with the screwdriver.

Do not apply pressure to the glass part of the bulb to prevent from having it shatter.

Push In New # 578 Bulb
Push a new # 578 bulb straight in to the socket.

(Tip - If you are installing an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try flipping it around in the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the + positive and - negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.)
