This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the updated fifth generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) Ford Mustang in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the trunk lid.

Owners of the earlier 5th generation Mustang from 2005 to 2009 and possibly the 4th generation 1994 to 2004 models with similar license plate light bulb housings may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb for the 2010 to 2013 Mustang (and most likely also the 2014 model year) is the festoon or "fuse" style number 6418 bulb.

The 2005 to 2009 Mustangs use the miniature wedge base # 168 bulbs.

The tools needed to replace the bulbs include a Phillips head screwdriver and a small flathead screwdriver.

You can either choose to open the trunk lid to replace the bulbs while standing or just kneel down on the ground.

Loosen the two screws on the sides of the bulb housing by turning them counter clockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver.

Remove the two screws and set them aside in a safe place.

Gently pry out the housing at either edge with the small flathead screwdriver.

Carefully pull out the old bulb from the housing by pushing back on the metal electrical contacts.

If the old bulbs were working and had been illuminated, be careful since they might still be hot enough to burn your skin.

Bulb Housing Re-Installed
Insert a new # 6418 festoon or "fuse" style bulb in to the housing between the metal electrical contacts. Make sure that the new bulb is securely in place.

If you would like to have brighter license plate lights, install some compatible 6418 LED bulbs.

If you have a 2005-2009 Mustang, push in the new # 168 bulb straight in to the socket.

Re-insert the housing in to the underside of the trunk lid.
