This automotive
"how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 2005, 2006,
2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt in replacing a burnt out
overhead dome light bulb in the passenger compartment. Owners of other GM vehicles such as the Chevy Sonic, Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Lumina, Equinox, Camaro, Pontiac G5, G6, Grand Prix, Grand Am, GTO, Sunfire, Buick LaCrosse, Regal, Verano, Enclave, Oldsmobile Alero, Aurora and GMC Acadia may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A replacement dome light bulb for the '05-'10 Cobalt is part # 561 from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, PIAA, Eiko, and Osram. If you would like to have a brighter dome light, install a compatible 561 LED bulb. The only tool needed to replace the dome light bulb is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry off the translucent lens cover. |

Remove Old Dome Bulb |
Old # 561 Light Bulb |
The first step is
to get into the rear passenger area of the Cobalt. Then gently insert the
blade of the small flathead screwdriver in between the dome light housing
and the translucent lens cover. Carefully pry off the lens cover and set it
aside in a safe place. Remove the old # 561 light bulb by pressing forward on the rear electrical contact bar and unhook the wire loop at the end of the bulb. I recommend buying the Sylvania 561 LL long life light bulbs since they tend to last a very long time. |

Install New # 561 Bulb |
Slide Switch - Test Bulb |
Install a new # 561
light bulb by first hooking the forward wire loop and then hold the rear
electrical contact forward while hooking the other wire loop. Tip - If you are installing an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try flipping it around in the socket. Test the new bulb by sliding the switch to the "On" position. |

Line Up Lens Cover |
Gently Snap Cover In Place |
Test New Dome Light Bulb |
Line up the
translucent dome light lens cover over the housing and gently snap it into
place.
Double check that the new bulb works by sliding the switch to the "On" position. Then return the switch to the "Door" position so that the dome light will turn on whenever any of the passenger doors are opened. Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
