This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation "WK2" (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) Jeep Grand Cherokee in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the cargo area tail gate.

Owners of other Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and RAM SUV or minivan vehicles with similar rear tail gates such as the Town & Country, Patriot, Compass, Cherokee, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, and C/V Tradesman may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 2825 available from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko, and PIAA.

You may also use any other miniature wedge base bulb such as the # 168, W5W, 194 or a compatible LED unit.

The only tool needed to change the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver used to remove the lens cover.

The first step is to locate the small plastic tab in the center of the outer edge of each license plate light bulb lens cover.

Do not pry on the inner edges (closest to the center line of the SUV) that have two notches.

Gently push the release tab with the blade of the small flathead screwdriver to release the retaining clip and pull down the lens cover.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

Then pop in the retaining clip on the outer edge of the lens cover in to place.

Test the new license plate light bulbs by turning on the parking lights or the headlights.
