How to take off the plastic interior door
panel in a 1st generation 2007 to 2016 Jeep Patriot to upgrade the speaker.

This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the first generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012,
2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Jeep Patriot SUV in removing the
plastic interior door panels in order to add soundproofing material,
fix a faulty electrical switch, replace a broken power window motor
or upgrade the OEM speaker. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and RAM vehicles such as the Compass, Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, 500, Town & Country, 200, 300, Pacifica, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, RAM 1500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster Van may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools required to remove the door panel and the OEM speaker include a flathead screwdriver, a plastic automotive panel pry bar tool, a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet, a Torx T25 socket, a Torx T20 screwdriver and also a Torx T25 screwdriver. |

(If you just want
to upgrade the OEM door speaker, skip down the page to the speaker grille
removal steps.) The first two steps are to roll the power window all the way down and then open the passenger door. Move to the top inner corner of the door panel and gently pry off the triangular shaped sail panel with a flathead screwdriver or a plastic automotive panel removal tool. Then pull back the chrome colored door opener handle and locate the small notch on the lower trim panel. Insert the blade of the flathead screwdriver in to the notch and gently pry out the trim cover. Set the trim panel aside in a safe place. |

Pry out the round
plastic screw cover at the bottom of the door pull handle well in the
armrest with a flathead screwdriver. Set the screw cap aside in a safe place. Move to the speaker grille at the bottom inner corner of the door panel and gently pry it off with a flathead screwdriver. |

Torx T-25 Screw Removed |
Set the speaker
cover aside in a safe place. Remove the screw behind the door opener handle by turning it counterclockwise with a Torx T25 star bit screwdriver. Set the screw aside with its corresponding trim cover. |

Remove 10mm Bolt |
Then remove the
screw in the bottom of the door pull handle at the center of the armrest by
turning it counterclockwise with a Torx T-25 star bit screwdriver. Set the T25 armrest screw aside in a safe place. Locate the two bolts on the bottom edge of the door panel. |

Remove the two
bolts on the bottom edge of the door panel by turning them counterclockwise
with a 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench. Set the two bolts aside in a safe place. There are two more 10mm bolts located on the inner edge of the door panel near the OEM door speaker. |

Remove the two 10mm
bolts by turning them counterclockwise. One bolt is located near the top inner corner of the door speaker and other is near the bottom inner corner of the speaker. Set the two bolts aside in a safe place. |

The OEM door
speaker is held in place by four screws. Two of the screws are Torx T20 and other two are Torx T25. Remove the black metal Torx T20 screws by turning them counterclockwise. |

Remove the two silver metal Torx T25 screws by turning them counterclockwise. | ||

Pull Out Old Speaker |
Set the four
speaker screws aside in a safe place. Pull the OEM door speaker out of the door frame. |

Disconnect Power Plug |
Pry Out Middle Panel |

Press in the
release tab on the electrical connector for the OEM door speaker before
pulling it straight out of the socket. The OEM door speaker can be replaced with aftermarket speakers in the following sizes: 5 1/4" (5.25"), 6 1/2" (6.5") and 6"x9". For some sizes, you might need an adapter bracket. I'd recommend purchasing new speakers from Amazon since you can verify that the speakers will fit your SUV. To help reduce road noise and make your new speakers sound their best, apply some Dynamat Sound Deadener to the metal door frame. It will stop vibrations and rattles when you crank up the volume. If you'd like to remove the rest of the door panel, follow the next steps. Pry out the middle part of the door panel with the plastic automotive pry bar tool. |

Press in the
release tab on the grey plastic electrical connector for the switch panel
before pulling it straight out of its socket. The middle part of the door panel is held in place by two metal plastic rods attached to retaining clips. |

Center Part Disconnected |
Disconnect the small bars at the end of the flexible plastic rods from their retaining clips to detach the middle part of the door panel. | ||

Loosen Counterclockwise |

Remove the three Torx T25 screws that secure the door panel to the power window motor by turning them counterclockwise. | ||

Loosen 10mm Bolt |

Set the three T25
power window motor screws aside in a safe place. There are two 10mm bolts near the middle of the door panel that were hidden by the recently removed center piece. |

White Plastic Bracket |
Remove the two
bolts by turning them counterclockwise with the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive
ratcheting wrench. Set the two 10mm bolts aside in a safe place. There is a white plastic bracket near the middle of the outer edge of the door panel on the back side. |

The white plastic
bracket is held in place by a single screw. Use a Torx T25 socket and a 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench to remove the screw on the back side of the white plastic bracket by turning it counterclockwise. |

Set the T25 screw
aside in a safe place. Pull the two retaining tabs on the white plastic bracket out of their slots on the door panel. Lift the plastic door panel up and off the top of the metal door frame. |

Tilt the top edge
of the door panel towards yourself while supporting the bottom edge with
your legs. Pull the tan plastic collar off the door opener handle bar. Lift the metal door opener handle bar out of its socket. |

Pull the wire
harness out of its retaining socket. Pull the two metal "L" hooks out of their plastic sockets. |

Pry open the
plastic loop with a flathead screwdriver. Now you can, finally, set the plastic interior door panel aside in a safe place. |

To replace the door
panel, hold it near the door frame. Re-attach the wire harness. Re-insert the plastic hooks at the bottom of the door panel in to the metal door frame. |

Line up the metal
"L" shaped hooks and re-attach them to their sockets. Replace the door handle opener handle bar in to its socket. Pop the tan plastic "C" collar over the door opener handle bar. Re-insert the door lock stalk in to the door panel. |

Tighten T25 Clockwise |
3rd Screw Secured |
Line up the white plastic power window motor and tighten the three Torx T25 screws in the clockwise direction. | ||
Re-Attach Metal Hook |

Line Up Window Motor Track |
Make sure the two
metal "L" hooks are re-attached to their slots on the door frame. Line up the bolt hole on the power window motor track with the bolt hole in the door panel. |

Tighten 10mm Clockwise |
Re-insert the 10mm bolt and tighten it in the clockwise direction. | ||

Re-insert the two
10mm bolts in the middle section of the door panel and tighten them in the
clockwise direction. Re-attach the two tabs on the white plastic bracket in to their slots. |

Re-insert the single T25 screw and tighten it in the clockwise direction. | ||
Install Door Speaker |

Install the door
speaker and replace the four screws. The two black metal screws are T20 and the two silver screws are T25. |

Push in the power
plug for the electrical panel in to its socket. Re-attach the two small cylinders for the two retaining rods for the middle panel. |

Tighten 10mm Clockwise |
Firmly tap in the
middle panel. Re-insert the two 10mm bolts along the inner edge of the door speaker. |

Re-insert the two 10mm bolts along the bottom edge of the door panel. | ||

Tighten the two 10mm bolts by turning them in the clockwise direction. | ||

Replace the
Torx T25 screw at the bottom the door pull handle in the armrest by turning it
clockwise. Pop in the round screw cap. |

Replace the T25
screw behind the door opener handle by turning it clockwise. Push in the trim panel over the screw behind the door opener handle. |

Push the sail panel back in to place at the top inner corner of the door panel. | ||

Line up the speaker
grille and firmly tap it back in to place. Sit inside the SUV, close the door and verify that the door opener handle, door lock stalk, power window switch and power door lock switch all still work properly. For more,
