Jeep Patriot License Plate Light Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out license plate light bulb in the tailgate door of a 1st generation 2007 to 2016 Jeep Patriot SUV.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Jeep Patriot SUV in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead console.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and RAM vehicles such as the Compass, Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, 500, Town & Country, 200, 300, Pacifica, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, RAM 1500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster Van may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 2825 or 168 which are available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

You can also use a brighter 2825 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver used to release the lens cover.

Pull Out Lens Cover

Old Bulb Exposed
Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently push in the release tab on the outer edge of the lens cover.

Remove the lens cover and set it aside in a safe place.

Old Bulb Removed

Old # W5W Bulb
If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.

Push In New W5W

Re-Insert Plastic Tabs
Push a new number 2825 or 168 bulb straight in to the socket.

If necessary, you may also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the W5W, 158, 194 or a compatible LED unit.

Test New License Lights
Re-insert the two plastic tabs on the inner edge of the lens cover in to the housing.

Then gently pop in the retaining clip on the outer edge of the lens cover.

Test the new license plate light bulbs by turning on the headlights or by pressing the "Unlock" button on the key fob.
