The Panama Canal was built by the United States of America from 1904 to
1914. Thousands of cargo ships, passenger cruise liners and oil tankers ships pass through the Panama Canal each year. Every ship pays a toll based upon their size or tonnage. Before the canal was created, ships had to travel thousands of miles more around South America. This shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama in Central America is about 40 miles long and consists of man made lakes, channels and water filled chambers called locks. Some of the common products that pass through the Panama Canal each day on container ships include automobiles, refrigerated food products, liquid gas, iron ore and grain. |

Some of the other interesting things to see at the Panama Canal include the Gatun Lake & Dam, the Miraflores Lake, Gaillard Cut, the Chagres River, and the Barro Colorado Island Wildlife Refugee which is run by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. |

Although many new military, shipping container, and oil tanker ships are being built larger than the Panama Canal's maximum size limit, known as "Panamax" class, the canal should be heavily trafficked for many years to come. |
