This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) Honda Pilot SUV in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the tailgate door.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Civic, Crosstour, CR-V, CR-Z, Fit, Insight, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, ILX, TSX, TLX, TL, RLX, RDX, NSX and MDX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 168, which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Maxell, PIAA and Eiko.

For brighter lights, choose 168 LED light bulbs.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Use the flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool to gently push the left light housing towards the right (middle) side of the tailgate.

If you are replacing the light bulb in the right side housing, push the housing towards the left (middle) side of the tailgate.

There are arrows printed on the lens cover to indicate where you should pry with the screwdriver and the direction.

Try to avoid using excessive force, the light housing should pop out relatively easily.

Pull the housing out of the underside of the tailgate.

Press the release tab on the electrical connector before pulling the power plug straight out of its socket.
