This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the XV50 7th generation (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Toyota Camry in changing the motor oil and replacing the cartridge oil filter in the 2.5 liter 2AR-FE inline four cylinder engine.

Owners of other Toyota, Scion or Lexus vehicles such as the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, RAV4, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Sienna, FJ Cruiser, Venza, Highlander, Avalon, 4Runner, Land Runner, Sequoia, IS 250, ES 350, GS 350, tC, xB, xD, iQ and FR-S may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The tools required to complete this procedure include a floor jack, jack stands, a 14mm socket, a 24mm socket, a 64mm oil filter wrench with 14 flats (AST Tools # TOY 640), a 24mm socket, 3/8" and 1/2" drive ratchets, a used oil catch container, a new cartridge oil filter and 5 U.S. quarts of new SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20 oil.

A few compatible replacement cartridge style oil filters with their part numbers include the following: Purolator L25608 or PSL25608, Toyota 04152-YZZA1, Pennzoil HPZ-161, Wix 57047, Mann-Filter ML 1031, Mobil 1 M1C-251, Beck Arnley 041-8190, Hastings LF607, Mahle OX 414D1, Fram XG9972 and Valvoline VO-84.

Oil Pan & Filter Housing
The first three steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly.

Engage the emergency/parking brake and chock the rear wheels of the vehicle to prevent it from moving.

Pop open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap and lift up the yellow handled engine oil level dipstick. Removing the oil filler cap and lifting up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Raise the front passenger side of the car with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands.

Do not solely rely on the floor jack to support the vehicle!

Used Oil Catch Basin
Slide under the front passenger side of the engine bay with a 14mm socket, a ratcheting wrench and a used oil catch container.

Locate the black metal oil pan with the silver metal oil drain bolt at the rear edge facing the back of the vehicle.

The black plastic cartridge oil filter housing is located just in front of the oil pan.

Tighten Oil Drain Bolt
Move the used oil catch container to just below the oil drain bolt.

Loosen the oil drain bolt with the 14mm socket and ratcheting wrench by turning it counter clockwise.

Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt since the old oil may be hot enough to burn your skin depending on how long you warmed up the engine in the first step.

Spin out the oil drain bolt and set it aside in a safe place. Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows to an occasional drip.

Re-insert the oil drain bolt and tighten it to just past hand tight or about 30 ft lbs or torque. Do not over tighten the oil drain bolt to avoid damaging the aluminum threads.

New Cartridge Oil Filter
Attach the 24mm socket and 1/2" drive ratcheting wrench to the oil filter wrench.

Loosen the oil filter housing by turning it counter clockwise.

Move the used oil catch container to just below the filter housing.

Spin off the oil filter housing, remove the old cartridge filter and pull off the old rubber o-ring at the bottom of the threads. You may need to use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry off the old rubber o-ring.

I would recommend using the Toyota 04152-YZZA1 genuine OEM filters since they have the best reviews on Amazon.

Twist On Oil Filter Housing
Dip your pinky finger in to some new SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20 oil and lubricate the new rubber o-ring.

Lubricating the rubber o-ring will allow it to form a better seal and make it easier to remove the oil filter housing during the next oil change.

Install the new rubber o-ring on to the filter housing at the bottom of the threads. Push the new cartridge oil filter in to the housing.

Twist on the oil filter housing in the clockwise direction by hand to prevent it from becoming cross threaded.

Attach the 64mm AST Tools TOY 640 oil filter wrench to the housing and tighten it with the 24mm socket and ratcheting wrench to just past hand tight or about 18 ft lbs of torque.

Double check that both the oil drain bolt and oil filter housing are tight before moving on to the next steps.

Remove the used oil catch container and any tools from the underside of the car.

Lower the vehicle from the jack stands using the floor jack.

Replace Oil Filler Cap
Insert an automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole at the top left of the engine.

Pour in about 4 quarts of the 2.5L engine's 4.6 quart total capacity for an oil change with filter replacement.

It is far better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than too much.

Temporarily replace the oil filler cap and push down the oil level dipstick.

Run the engine for a few minutes, shut it off, allow it to rest for 5-10 minutes and check the oil level on the dipstick.

Slowly add in more oil until the level on the dipstick reaches at or just below the upper metal dot. You may not need to pour in the entire 4.6 quarts of oil depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.

Once the oil level is correct, twist on the oil filler cap and replace the dipstick.

To reset the "MAINT REQD" light follow these steps: 1. Set the display to "Trip A". 2. Turn the ignition to "Off". 3. Press and hold the "display change" (trip reset) button. 4. Continue holding the reset button and turn the ignition to "On" but do not start the engine. 5. You should see "000000" flash on the display and then the "MAINT REQD" light will go off.

Be sure to record the oil change in your vehicle's service records.

It's also a good idea to watch your driveway or parking spot for drops of oil and check the oil level on the dipstick during the next few days.
