This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Nissan Versa sedan in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the housings attached to the underside of the trunk lid.

Owners of other Nissan vehicle such as the Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue,  Note, Leaf, Juke, Kicks, Latio, Almera, Sunny, Qashqai, NV200, Pathfinder, Frontier and X-Trail may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825 (also known as "W5W") which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, Bosch, GE and Philips.

If you would like to have brighter license plate lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulbs, install some 2825 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to remove the housings and access the bulbs is a flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

The procedure is the same for removing either the driver side or passenger side light housings.

There is a flexible plastic retaining clip on the left (driver) side of both housings.

I found it easiest to pry out the housings by inserting the flat head screwdriver in between the right (passenger) side and the underside of the trunk lid.

Gently push the light housing towards the left.

Once you have compressed the flexible retaining clip on the left a bit, you can pull out the tab on the right side of the housing from the opening in the underside of the trunk lid.

Pull the light housing down out of the opening.

Rotate the base of the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb in this 2019 Versa SV was marked as part number "W5W" which is the same as the more commonly available 2825 bulb.

Push a new number 2825 light bulb straight into the socket.

If you'd like to have brighter license plate lights, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulbs.

Re-insert the bulb socket into the light housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place.

First, re-insert the tab on the right side of the light housing back into the opening in the underside of the trunk lid.

License Plate Bulbs Done!
Repeat the process to replace the other light housing if you removed it.

To test the new license plate light bulbs, turn on the parking lights or press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the exterior lights.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your car's service records.
