This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021) Mitsubishi Outlander SUV in cleaning or changing the A/C system's cabin air filter element located in the HVAC blower motor housing.

Owners of other Mitsubishi vehicles such as the Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Mirage, Mirage G4, Lancer, ASX, Montero Sport, Pajero, Xpander, Strada and RVR may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) cabin air filter part number is Mitsubishi 7803A109 (made by Mann Filter).

A few compatible replacement aftermarket cabin air filters with their part numbers are as follows: Spearhead BE-140, EPAuto CP140, Fram CF10140, EcoGard XC35530 and Premium Guard PC5530X.

No tools are needed to access and replace the cabin air filter.

The first few steps are to sit in the front passenger seat, open the glove box and empty out the contents.

Move to the left outer side wall of the glove box and locate the damper arm.

Carefully lower the glove box down towards the floor mat.

The plastic hinges will most likely come apart. They can easily be reattached later on.

Once the glove box is out of the way, you'll be able to see the rectangular shaped white plastic filter access cover and the black plastic HVAC blower motor housing.

The filter access panel is held in place by two retaining clips with one on the left side and the other on the right side.

Gently pull out the rear edge of one of the retaining clips to release it from the filter housing.

Swing open the filter cover and carefully release the retaining clip on the opposite side.

Try to avoid using excessive force to prevent from breaking the plastic retaining clips.

Set the cover aside in a safe place.

Inspect Both Sides

Clean With Vacuum
Inspect both sides of the old filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, sand, insects, leaves, twigs, soot, pollen, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the Spearhead BE-140 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews from other Outlander owners.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum.

Slide In New Air Filter
Check the filter slot for any large debris such as leaves, dragonflies or twigs.

It would also be a good idea to look for any signs of rodent infestation such as a rat or mouse nest.

Orientate the new air filter with the "Air Flow" arrows pointing down towards the floor mat.

Slide the new air filter straight into the slot.
