Outlander Engine Oil Change Guide
How to change the motor oil and filter in
a 2014 to 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander with the MIVEC 2.4L I4 engine.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third
generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021) Mitsubishi
Outlander SUV in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter for the MIVEC
4J12 2.4 liter inline four cylinder naturally aspirated engine. (The
procedure should be very similar for models equipped with the
2.0L I4 engine or the 3.0L V6 engine.) Owners of other Mitsubishi vehicles such as the Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Mirage, Mirage G4, Lancer, ASX, Montero Sport, Pajero, Xpander, Strada and RVR may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mobil 1 M1-110A, Fram XG7317, Bosch 3323, Royal Purple 10-2867, Wix 57356XP and Purolator PBL14610. The total oil capacity specification in the owner's manual for this 2020 Outlander SEL with the 2.4L I4 is 4.9 U.S. quarts (oil pan 4.5 quarts plus oil filter 0.32 quarts = 4.82 U.S. quarts to be exact). The recommended oil type and viscosity is full synthetic SAE 0W-20 (or 5W-20 if necessary). (The oil capacity for the 2.4L I4 engine in liters is 4.3L for the oil pan and 0.3L for the oil filter for a total of 4.6 liters.) Attention: Please be sure to double check the owner's manual for your specific vehicle. The correct oil capacity and viscosity recommendation may vary depending on the model year, trim level and your region of the world. The tools and other items needed to complete this procedure include a 17mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch container, an automotive funnel and a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench (optional but highly recommended). The first few steps are to drive the SUV on to a level surface, shift the transmission into park and engage the emergency / parking brake. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes to help suspend any contaminants within the the old oil and also allow it drain out more quickly. Then turn off the ignition. Place wheel chocks on both sides of the rear tires to help prevent the vehicle from moving. The next steps are to open the hood, twist off the oil fill cap in the counterclockwise direction and partially remove the dipstick an inch or two. Set the oil fill cap aside in a safe place. Removing the oil fill cap and lifting up the dip stick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out faster. |

There should be
enough working room under the SUV to perform the next steps. If you'd like
some more room, raise the front of the SUV with a floor jack and securely
support it with at least two jack stands. Slide under the front passenger side of the SUV with the used oil catch container, a 17mm socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Locate the black metal oil drain bolt on the rear edge of the black metal oil pan. If you look at Picture # 5 in the row above, you'll see a yellow arrow pointing to the oil drain bolt. Slide the used oil catch container to just below the drain bolt. |

Carefully loosen
the oil drain bolt in the counterclockwise direction with the 17mm socket
and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Be careful when you remove the drain bolt! The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers depending on how long you warmed up the engine. Allow the oil to continue draining out for at least 5 to 10 minutes or until the flow slows down to just an occasional drip. |

Check the condition
of the washer (or "gasket") on the oil drain bolt. If the washer appears
worn or damaged, I highly recommend replacing it to help prevent oil leaks. The compatible replacement oil drain bolt washer part number is Mitsubishi MD050317. Spin in the oil drain bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the drain bolt with the 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet in the clockwise direction until it is snug or to just a fraction of a turn past hand tight. If you have a torque wrench, tighten the drain bolt in the clockwise direction to the Outlander's service manual torque specification of 26 to 32 lb-ft. The old oil filter is located just in front of the oil pan closer to the front of the vehicle. |

Slowly slide the
used oil catch basin to just below the old oil filter. Loosen the old oil filter by turning it in the counterclockwise direction. If you have trouble loosening the old oil filter, I highly recommend using the Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench. It makes removing even the most stubborn, stuck and over tightened oil filters extremely easy. Attach the Lisle oil filter wrench to a short extension bar and a 3/8" drive ratchet. |

Use the wrench to
loosen the filter in the counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to drain out of the filter receptacle for at least a minute or two. Discard the old oil filter. Dip your finger into some new oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring on the new oil filter. Lubricating the o-ring gasket on the new filter will help it to form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make it easier to remove during the next oil change. |

Make sure that the
rubber o-ring gasket from the old oil filter is not still attached to the
engine. Spin on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until the rubber o-ring makes contact with the mounting flange. Continue tightening the new filter to about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn past finger tight. Try to avoid over tightening the new filter to prevent from damaging the o-ring which could lead to oil leaks. Double check that the new oil filter and the drain bolt are tight before moving on to the next steps. Be sure to recycle the used oil by taking it to any automotive service shop or an auto parts store. According to the owner's manual, the exact oil capacity for an oil change with a filter replacement on the MIVEC 2.4L naturally aspirated I4 engine is 4.5 quarts for the oil pan plus 0.32 quarts for the oil filter which is exactly 4.82 U.S. quarts. Some service manuals or the specifications section of the owner's manual may round this capacity up to 4.9 U.S. quarts (or 4.6 liters). Insert the automotive funnel into the oil fill hole. Since it is much better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to overfill it, I recommend at first only pouring in about 4.25 to 4.5 U.S. quarts of the 4.82 U.S. quarts total capacity. Running an engine that has been overfilled with oil may cause sluggish performance and possibly damage seals, gaskets or other components. The recommended oil type and viscosity is SAE 0W-20 full synthetic. (If necessary, you can temporarily use SAE 5W-20.) |

After you have
poured in about 4.25 to 4.5 U.S. quarts of new oil, replace the fill cap by
twisting it on in the clockwise direction and push the dip stick all the way
back down. Start the engine and let it warm up to near operating temperature for at least a few minutes. Then shut off the ignition and allow the new oil to drain back down to the pan for at least 10 to 15 minutes. |

Pull out the dip stick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more oil (up to the 4.82 U.S. quarts total capacity) and repeatedly check the level on the dip stick until it reaches up to or just below the upper hole in the tip of the dip stick. The lower hole indicates the "MIN" (minimum) line and the upper hole indicates the "MAX" (maximum) oil level. Once the oil level is correct, replace the oil fill cap and fully reinsert the dip stick. Double check that the fill cap is tight and the dip stick is secured in place. Be sure to write down the oil change in your vehicle's service records. To remove the "Routine Maintenance Required" message and reset the oil life meter, follow these steps: 1. Turn the ignition to "OFF". 2. Press the "Multi Information Display" button (it looks like two stacked pieces of paper on the left side of the steering wheel next to the "active stability control off" button) until the service reminder display screen with the wrench icon is displayed. 3. Press and hold the "Multi-Information Display Switch" for about 2 seconds until the wrench icon starts to flash. 4. Press the "Multi-Information Display Switch" button again. The indicator will change from "--" to "CLEAR". 5. The screen should now show the time and mileage until the next service is due. Please check out all of the
