This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and probably also the refreshed 2019,
2020, 2021 and 2022 model years of the Ford Edge SUV in taking off the
plastic interior door panels in order to upgrade the OEM speakers, add
soundproofing material, fix a faulty electrical switch or replace a broken
power window motor. Owners of other Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the Escape, Expedition, EcoSport, Flex, Explorer, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Taurus, Ranger, Transit Connect, F-150, Endura, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, MKZ, Navigator, Aviator, Nautilus and Continental may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools needed to remove the door panels include a small flat head screwdriver, a plastic pry bar tool, a 7mm socket, a 10mm socket, an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet. To remove the OEM door speakers, you'll need a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet. The first two steps are to lower the power window all the way down and fully open the door. Then move to the silver colored door opener handle and locate the plastic trim cover situated behind it. Use a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool to very gently pry out the front edge of the black plastic trim piece located behind the door opener handle. There are two plastic retaining clips at the front edge of the trim cover and two hooks at the rear edge. Do not pry at the rear edge of the trim cover (located closer to the back of the car) since the hooks are holding it in place. Pull out the front edge of the trim cover from behind the door opener handle and slide out the two hooks. Set the trim cover aside in a safe place. |

Be careful when you
pry at the outer side edge of the switch panel.
There are plastic hooks along the outer edge. Try to avoid using excessive force. The switch panel should pop out relatively easily. If you have trouble removing the switch panel, just be patient and keep on loosening the friction fastener retaining clips with the plastic pry bar tool. |

The original lower front door speakers can be replaced with aftermarket car speakers in the following compatible sizes: 6 1/2" (6.5") and 6 3/4" (6.75"). I highly recommend applying some Dynamat sound deadener to the metal door frame and the back side of the plastic door panel to help stop any vibrations or rattles when you crank up the volume. |
