This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the tenth generation 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Honda Civic in changing a burnt out dome light bulb in the housing attached to the headliner above the rear passenger seats.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Insight, Clarity, Fit, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot, Passport, Odyssey, Ridgeline, ILX, MDX, RDX, NSX, RLX and TLX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 168 which is available from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko and PIAA.

If you would like to have a brighter dome light bulb that will also last a lot longer before burning out, choose a 168 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulb is a small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you may choose to either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or use a plastic automotive trim removal tool.

Insert the tip of the screwdriver into one of the two small notches at the rear edge of the lens cover.

Gently pry out the lens cover. You may need to re-insert the screwdriver into the other notch to fully remove the cover.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The old bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Grasp the old bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

Or install a brighter 168 LED bulb.

Line up the translucent plastic lens cover with the light housing.

Move Switch To "Door"
First, re-insert the two tabs on the rear edge back into the housing.

Then gently pop in the retaining clips on the front edge of the lens cover into place.

To test the new light bulb, slide the "On / Door / Off" switch to the "On" position.

I recommend leaving the switch in the "Door" position so that the dome light will turn on when the driver door or any passenger door is opened.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
