Kia Optima
Windshield Wiper Blades Replacement Guide
How to change the front windshield window
wiper blades on a 4th generation 2016 to 2020 Kia Optima.
2019 Optima Wiper Blades |
Ignition in "On" Position |
Turn Key To "Off" |
This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th
generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years) Kia Optima sedan in
changing the front windshield window wiper blades. Owners of other Kia, Hyundai or Genesis vehicles such as the Niro, Sportage, Sedona, Telluride, Sorento, Rio, Forte, Soul, K900, Cadenza, K5, Stinger, Tucson, Santa Fe, Kona, Palisade, Elantra, Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Nexo, Venue, G70, G80 and G90 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) windshield wiper blade sizes in inches are as follows: Driver Side 26" and Passenger Side 18". A few compatible replacement wiper blades with their part numbers are as follows: Bosch ICON 26A & Bosch ICON 18A, Aero 26" + 18", Rain-X 5079281-2 & Rain-X 5079275-2, PIAA 95065 & PIAA 95045, Trico 25-260 & Trico 25-180 and Michelin 14526 & Michelin 14518. The only tool needed to remove and replace the wiper blades is a small plastic pry bar tool or a flat head screwdriver. The steps to move the windshield wiper arms into the "service position" are as follows: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position but do not start the engine. 2. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position. 3. Within 20 seconds, move the windshield wiper stalk up to the "MIST" position and hold it there for a few seconds. 4. You should see the wiper blades move up to the top of the windshield and stay there. |

Wiper Control Stalk |
Raise & Hold - "Mist" |
Wipers In Service Position |
If the wiper arms
didn't move up to the service position, repeat the process. Remove the key from the ignition. |
||
Driver Side Wiper Arm |
Raise Off Windshield |
Black Plastic Lock Tab |
Carefully lift the
wiper arm off the windshield until it remains in the raised position by
itself. Locate the rectangular shaped black plastic locking tab at the center of the old wiper blade just above the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. |
||
Pry Open Lock Tab |
Swing Up To Release |
Slide Blade Down |
Use the plastic pry
bar tool or a flat head screwdriver to gently pry up the bottom edge of the
lock tab. Swing open the lock tab towards the top of the wiper blade. Firmly push the old wiper blade down to slide the plastic mounting bracket out of the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. |
||
Rotate Perpendicular |
Pull Blade Off Hook |
Towel Protect Glass |
Rotate the old
wiper blade until is just about perpendicular to the metal wiper arm. Pull the old wiper blade off the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. Place a towel on the windshield to protect the window from being scratched, chipped, shattered or cracked just in case the wiper arm smacks down on to the glass while you are replacing the wiper blade. |
||
Mounting Bracket |
Line Up With Metal Hook |
Pass Hook Through Blade |
I recommend buying
the Bosch ICON 26A and
Bosch ICON 18A wiper blades
since they have excellent reviews on Amazon from other Optima owners. Line up the new wiper blade with the metal wiper arm. The rubber wiper blade should be pointing up away from the windshield. Pass the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm through the opening in the center of the new wiper blade. |
||
Rotate Blade Parallel |
Pull Bracket Into Hook |
Swing Down Lock Tab |
Rotate the new
wiper blade until it is just about parallel with the wiper arm. Push the new wiper blade up until the plastic mounting bracket snaps into the metal hook. You should feel or hear the mounting bracket "click" securely into place. Swing down the plastic lock tab and pop it back into place. Double check that the new wiper blade is securely attached to the wiper arm. |
||
Lower Arm To Window |
Turn Ignition to "On" |
|
Gently lower the
wiper blade and arm back down to the windshield. To return the wiper arms to the lowered ready position by the black plastic cowl below the hood, turn the ignition switch to the "On" position. |
||
Move To "Mist" Position |
Arms In Down Position |
Wiper Blades Replaced |
Then move the wiper
control stalk to the "MIST" position.
You should see the wiper arms move back down. For the best wiper performance, I highly recommend cleaning off the windshield and applying a glass treatment product that will repel water from the window such as Rain-X. Be sure to write down the wiper blade change in your vehicle's service records. Please check out all of my
