Pry Out Lens Cover
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Mazda CX-9 SUV in changing a burnt out cargo area light bulb located in the housing attached to the plastic interior panel on the tailgate door.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the CX-5, CX-3, CX-30, MX-30, CX-8, Mazda8 (MPV), MX-5 Miata, Mazda2 (Demio), Mazda3 (Axela), Mazda6 (Atenza) and Mazda5 (Premacy) may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement festoon style light bulb part number is DE3175.

If you would like to have a brighter cargo area light that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulb, install a DE3175 LED unit.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulb is a small flat head screwdriver such as from a precision screwdriver set or a small plastic pry bar tool.

The first two steps are to open the tailgate door and then locate the cargo area light housing.

Locate the small notch on the left (passenger) side of the lens cover situated near the "On / Off" switch.

Insert the small flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool into the notch.

Gently pry out the lens cover. Try to avoid using excessive force.

The lens cover should pop out relatively easily.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. The old light bulb might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Push back the flexible metal electrical contact on the right (driver) side of the light housing to release the old light bulb.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

First, insert the bulb into the opening in the electrical contact on the left and then pop it into the flexible electrical contact on the right side of the socket.

Test New Light Bulb
Make sure the new light bulb is securely installed in the socket.

Line up the lens cover with the light housing.

Gently pop the lens cover back into place to secure the retaining clips.

To test the new light bulb, move the rocker switch to the "On" position.

Tip -  If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotating it 180 degrees and pushing it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts in the correct orientation.

Don't forget to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
