Pry Out Inner Edge
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and probably also the 2022 and 2023 model years) Toyota Tacoma truck in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead console or upgrading both of them to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Toyota or Lexus vehicles such as the Tundra, 4Runner, Hilux, Highlander, C-HR, Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Supra, Land Cruiser, Prius, RAV4, Mirai, Sequoia, Sienna, Yaris, CT 200h, ES 300h, RX 350, GX 460, LX 570, NX 300, RX 450h, UX 200 and UX 250h may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825 (also known as W5W) which are available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, Toshiba, Bosch and Philips.

If you would like to have brighter map lights that will also last much longer before burning out, install some 2825 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is either a small flat head screwdriver or a small plastic pry bar tool.

The procedure for changing the driver side and passenger side light bulbs are the same.

To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or use a small plastic trim panel removal tool.

Update 1-20-2024: Another Tacoma owner sent an email informing me that instead of removing the lens covers, you could instead just pry down the entire overhead housing by loosening the friction fasteners to access the bulb sockets from the rear.

Carefully insert the blade of the flat head screwdriver in between the inner edge (closer to the center line of the vehicle) of the lens cover and the overhead console.

Gently pry out the inner edge of the lens cover to release the two "C" shaped retaining clips.

Do NOT pry at the outer edge of the lens cover (closer to the outside of the car). There is a plastic tab on the outer edge that could be broken.

You may need to remove and re-insert the screwdriver into another section of the lens cover along the inner edge to fully release both "C" shaped retaining clips from their mounting bars.

Do NOT pry at the outer edge of the lens cover.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

If the old light bulb was recently turned on, be careful since it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
You might be able to just grasp the old light bulb with your thumb and forefinger to pull it out of the socket.

I had trouble getting a good grip on the old light bulb with my fingers, so I first tried my trick of using a piece of stiff wire with a loop on the end to pull the bulb out of the socket.

When that didn't work, I instead used a piece of curled up Gorilla Tape to pull out the old bulb.

Gently push the tape on to the bulb and then slowly pull it out of the socket.

Push the new 2825 light bulb straight into the socket.

If you would like to have brighter and longer lasting map lights, install some compatible replacement 2825 LED bulbs.

Push the "On / Off" button to test the new light bulb.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try pulling it out of the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Line up the lens cover with the opening in the overhead console.

First, re-insert the tab on the outer edge into the light housing.

Then gently snap in the two "C" shaped retaining clips on the inner edge over their mounting pegs.

Testing New Light Bulbs
Double check that the lens cover is flush with the overhead console at every edge.

To test the new light bulb, press on the outer edge of the lens cover to activate the "On / Off" switch.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
