This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and revised 2022) Jeep Compass
SUV in checking, cleaning and changing the engine air filter element for the
Tigershark MultiAir II 2.4 liter inline four cylinder engine. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) engine air filter in this 2019 Compass Trailhawak 4X4 model was marked as part number Mopar 51977574. A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mopar 68247339AA, Fram CA12066, K&N 33-5034, EcoGard XA10492, Premium Guard PA99095 and Mahle LX 4085. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a Phillips head screwdriver or an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet. A wet/dry shop vacuum can also be useful for cleaning out the bottom half of the air box or for cleaning the old filter. The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the left (passenger) side of the engine bay. The square black plastic engine air filter housing is situated just to the left of the yellow dipstick handle. |

Three Screws Loosened |
Lift Open Air Box Cover |
There are three
fasteners that hold the air box cover in place.
You can loosen them with either a Phillips head screwdriver or an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet. There is one screw on the rear edge, another on the right side and the third is located on the front edge. Loosen the three screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction. The screws are "captured" and should remain attached to the air box cover. Carefully lift open the air box cover to access the old filter. |

Pull Out Old Air Filter |
Clean Out Air Box |
Inspect Old Air Filter |
Pull the old air
filter out of the bottom half of the air box.
Clean out any sand, debris or insects from the bottom half of the air box with a wet/dry shop vacuum. Inspect both sides of the old air filter. If the old filter is dark gray or black and clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, soot, leaves, insects, seeds, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out any large debris and remove the fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum. |

Check Both Sides |
OEM Part Number |
Lower In New Air Filter |
Lower the new
filter into the bottom half of the air box assembly. The white foam cover should be pointing down and the rubber gasket should be pointing up towards you. |

Lower Air Box Cover |
Tighten Three Fasteners |
Engine Air Filter Replaced |
Make sure the new
filter is fully seated in the air box. Lower the air box cover down into place. Tighten the three fasteners by turning them in the clockwise direction with the Phillips head screwdriver or the 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet. Try to avoid over tightening the screws to prevent from cracking the plastic air box housing. According to the maintenance schedule in the 2019 Compass owner's manual, the engine air filter element's service interval is to change it after 50,000 miles (80,000km) or every 5 years and then again every 40,000 miles. I would recommend checking and cleaning it at every oil change. If you drive off road or in dusty and sandy conditions the filter should be inspected frequently and changed after 30,000 miles. Then again every 20,000 miles. Be sure to write down the filter change in your vehicle's service records. Please
