This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second
generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and revised 2022) Jeep Compass
SUV in changing a burnt out front turn signal light bulb or DRL (daytime
running lamp) light bulb in the housing located below the headlight assembly
and above the fog light bulb housing. Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement part numbers are as follows: Front Turn Signal # 7444NA and DRL # PSX24W (also known as PA46-GF40, 12276C1 or 12276). If you'd like to have brighter lights, install some 7444NA LED and PSX24W LED units. The first step is to turn the steering wheel all the way in the opposite direction of the burnt out front turn signal or DRL light bulb. This will help create more working room in the wheel well. |

Plastic Wheel Well Liner |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Use 8mm Socket |
Locate the four
black metal screws along the outer edge of the plastic wheel well liner (or
splash shield) situated in front of the tire. Loosen the four screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 8mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. |
||
Nut - Top of Wheel Well |
||
Set the four screws
aside in a safe place. Locate the black nut on the ceiling of the wheel well above the front tire and near the suspension spring. |
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Spin Off 10mm Nut |
Four 8mm & One 10mm |
Loosen the nut by
turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm nut and a 1/4"
drive ratchet. Set the nut aside with the four screws. |
||
Pry Out Splash Shield |
Open To Access Bulbs |
DRL (Left) & Turn (Right) |
Use a flat head
screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool to gently pry out the black plastic
wheel well liner. Firmly pull back the wheel well liner to access the bulb sockets. When you look into the wheel well past the splash shield, you'll see the DRL light bulb socket on the left and the front turn signal is on the right. (The fog light bulb is located down below the housing that contains the DRL and front turn signal light bulbs.) |
||
Push Release Tab |
Power Plug Disconnected |
Pinch Sides of Bulb |
Push down the
release tab on the orange colored electrical connector attached to the
yellow / tan colored DRL (daytime running lamp) light bulb. Pull the electrical connector straight off the base of the old DRL light bulb. Pinch together the two release tabs on the DRL light bulb before pulling it straight out of the housing. |
||
Two Release Tabs |
Squeeze To Release |
Philips PSX24W |
If you have trouble
removing the old DRL light bulb, take a look at the pictures above showing
how to squeeze together the release tabs to unlock the retaining clips. The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb was marked as part number Philips PA46-GF40 (also known as PSX24W, 12276C1 or 12276). |
||
Line Up New Light Bulb |
Push In New Bulb |
Push On Power Plug |
Try to avoid
touching the glass part of the new light bulb with your fingers or anything
greasy in the engine bay. If you do get any grease or oil on the glass part of the new bulbs, wipe it clean with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. Any grease or oil left on the new bulb may cause a hot spot which could lead to the bulb failing prematurely. Push the new PSX24W light bulb into the socket. If you'd like to have brighter DRL lights, install some compatible replacement PSX24W LED units. You should feel or hear the two retaining clips "click" securely into place. Push the orange electrical connector straight on to the base of the new light bulb. |
||
Turn Signal - Inner Edge |
Orange / Tan Socket |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
The front turn
signal light bulb is located closer to the inner edge of the housing. Rotate the orange / dark tan colored front turn signal light bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. |
||
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Old Light Bulb Removed |
Push In New Light Bulb |
Pull the old light
bulb straight out of the socket. If you have trouble removing the old light bulb due to sand, debris or corrosion (rust), put on some protective gloves and try gently wiggling it back and forth while pulling it straight out. (The OEM light bulb was marked as part number 7442NA.) Push a new amber colored number 7444NA light bulb straight into the socket. Clean off the new bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. If you'd like to have brighter front turn signal lights, install some compatible replacement 7444NA LED units. |
||
Empty Bulb Housing |
1/4 Turn Clockwise |
Test New Light Bulbs |
Reinsert the bulb
socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to
secure it into place. To test the new light bulbs, turn on the headlights and activate the hazard lights. |
||
Test Front Turn Signal |
Testing DRL Light Bulb |
Replace Wheel Well Liner |
Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it
doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and
push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are polarized and will only
turn on when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in
the correct orientation. Push the wheel well liner back into place. |
||
Spin In 4 8mm Screws |
Spin On 10mm Nut |
Tighten Nut Clockwise |
Spin in the four
8mm screws a few turns in the clockwise direction. Tighten the screws with the 8mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug. Spin on the 10mm nut at the top of the wheel well in the clockwise direction on to the threaded bar. |
||
Tighten 8mm Screws |
Turn Screws Clockwise |
Wheel Well Liner Secured |
Tighten the 10mm
nut in the clockwise direction until it is snug. Make sure all five fasteners are secure. Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. Please
