Loosen Metal Clips
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and facelifted 2022) Jeep Compass SUV in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead console (or upgrading both of them to brighter LED units)

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulbs part number is W5W (also known as 2825).

If you'd like to have brighter map lights, install some W5W LED units.

The tools needed to access and replace the bulbs include a set of plastic pry bar tools, a Torx T15 star bit screwdriver and a flathead screwdriver.

The first steps are to gently insert two or more plastic pry bar tools in between the plastic overhead console and the fabric headliner.

Allow the plastic pry bars to rest in between the overhead console and the headliner for a few moments to loosen the very tight metal retaining clips.

There are two metal friction fasteners on the front edge of the overhead console (close to the windshield) and another two metal retaining clips on the rear edge of the assembly.

Opening In Headliner
You may need to remove and reinsert the plastic pry bars in several locations around the overhead console to loosen all four metal retaining clips.

Please take your time and be gentle. If the overhead console has not been removed in the past, the metal clips will be very tight.

If you try to forcefully pull down the overhead console, you may break the plastic housing or the translucent lens covers.

Once all four of the metal clips have been loosened, carefully pull the overhead console down out of the opening in the headliner.

Push In Release Tab
Double check that the four metal retaining clips are still attached to the overhead housing and not stuck in the mounting bracket by the roof of the vehicle.

Push in the release tab on the white plastic electrical connector before sliding it straight out of its socket.

Overhead Console
Loosen Counterclockwise
Set the overhead console down on a soft surface such as a micro fiber cloth to help prevent from scratching the lens covers.

There are four Torx T-15 screws that need to be removed in order to access each map light bulb socket.

Loosen the four black metal screws by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the Torx T15 screwdriver.

Remove Second Screw
Remove 3rd Screw
Remove 4th Screw
Set the four screws aside in a safe place.

I recommend only changing one light bulb at a time to help reduce the risk of losing a small part or a screw.

Pull Out Light Housing
White Light Bulb Socket

Lift the light housing out of the overhead console.

Turn over the chrome reflector piece and locate the white plastic bulb socket.

Release Small White Clips
Gently Release 4 Clips
Bulb Socket Removed
Locate the white plastic bulb socket in the center of the chrome reflector.

There are four white plastic retaining tabs that secure the bulb socket in the reflector.

Use a small flat head screwdriver to very gently release each of the four white plastic retaining clips.

Carefully remove the bulb socket from the back side of the reflector.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Old Light Bulb Removed
Warning: If the old light bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Allow the bulb to cool off before touching it.

Gently pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.

In this 2019 Compass Trailhawk 4X4 model, the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb was marked as part number Toshiba 12V5W W5W.

Push In New Light Bulb
Replace Bulb Socket
Lower Light Housing
Push a new number W5W miniature wedge base light bulb straight into the socket.

(The W5W bulb is also known as part number 2825.)

Clean off the new bulb with a micro fiber cloth or an alcohol wipe. If there is any grease or oil on the new incandescent bulb, it might cause hot spots and lead to it burning out prematurely.

If you'd like to have brighter map lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulbs, install some compatible replacement W5W LED (or 2825 LED) units.

Push the white plastic bulb socket back into the rectangular opening in the back of the chrome reflector piece.

You should feel or hear the four white plastic retaining tabs "click" securely into place.

Lower the chrome reflector piece back into place on the overhead console assembly.

Replace Four Screws
Push In Power Plug
Line Up Rear Clips
Replace the four screws by turning them in the clockwise direction with the Torx T-15 star bit screwdriver until they are snug.

Try to avoid over tightening the screws to prevent from cracking the plastic pieces.

Repeat the process to replace the other map light bulb.

Line up the overhead console with the opening in the headliner.

Line Up Front Fasteners
Push To Secure Console
Test New Light Bulbs
Carefully push on the overhead console to secure the four metal friction fasteners into their mounting slots.

Make sure the overhead console is flush with the headliner fabric at every edge.

To test the new map light bulbs, press the "On / Off" buttons in the center of the overhead console.

If the lights won't turn on, try pressing the "Unlock" button on the smart key fob to reactivate the interior lights.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work properly when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
