This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and facelifted 2022) Jeep Compass SUV in changing a weak or dead battery inside the "smart" or "intelligent" key fob remote control for the keyless entry system and push button start system.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) coin cell battery (also known as a "button" or "watch" battery) is part number CR2032 which is available from various manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sony, GE, Maxell, Duracell and Energizer.

The only tool needed to access and replace the key fob battery is a flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

The first step is to turn over the fob and locate the small black switch near the chrome silver metal ignition key.

Backup Ignition Key
Metal Key Removed
Insert Screwdriver
Slide the black switch over to release the backup / emergency metal ignition key.

Pull the ignition key straight out of its slot and set it aside in a safe place.

Insert the blade of the screwdriver or the plastic pry bar tool in between the two halves of the fob near the black plastic key ring loop.

Pry Apart Two Halves
Gently Separate Edges
Key Fob Disassembled
Gently pry apart the two halves of the fob.

You may need to remove and reinsert the screwdriver into several locations along the fob to fully separate the two halves.

Pry Out Old Battery
Empty Battery Socket
OEM Battery Removed
Use the blade of a flat head screwdriver to very gently pry out the old battery from the socket.

Try to avoid bending or damaging the metal electrical contacts.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) battery in this 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk 4X4 was a Panasonic CR2032 3V lithium coin cell.

+ Positive Side Down
Install New Battery
New Battery In Socket
Orientate the new battery with the "+" positive side facing down and the "-" negative side facing up towards you.

Carefully push the new battery into the holder. It should "pop" securely into place.

Double check that the blank "-" negative side is facing up towards you.

Line Up Circuit Board
Snap Together Two Halves
Flush At Every Edge
Line up the top half of the fob (with the green circuit board) over the bottom half.

Gently snap together the two halves of the fob. You should hear or feel them "click" together.

Make sure that the two halves of the fob are flush together at every edge.

Slide In Ignition Key
Key Fob Reassembled
Test New Fob Battery
Replace the metal ignition key into its slot.

To test the new battery, stand near your SUV and press the "Unlock" and "Lock" buttons on the key fob.

If the new battery is working properly, you should see the parking lights flash and hear the door locks opening or closing.

Note - Just changing the battery shouldn't clear the original programming from the factory. You should not have to reprogram your key fob.

Be sure to write down the battery change in your vehicle's service records.
