This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and revised 2022) Jeep Compass SUV in using the automatic transmission's shift lock release mechanism to change the gear selector from "P" (Park) to "N" (Neutral) in order to manually move a disabled vehicle due to a weak or dead 12V car battery.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a flat head screwdriver and possibly also a plastic pry bar tool.

The first few steps are to engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the tires to help prevent the SUV from moving unexpectedly.

Sit in the driver's seat and locate the faux leather boot and plastic trim ring that covers the top of the gear selector assembly.

Very gently pull up the faux leather boot and the plastic trim ring to release the friction fasteners. If necessary, use the plastic pry bar tool to pop out the trim ring.

Continue releasing all of the friction fasteners at every edge of the plastic trim ring.

The white plastic shift lock release button is located near the rear edge of the gear selector assembly.

It is situated under a black plastic housing.

There is a red arrow pointing to the shift lock release button in Picture # 6 above.

Push your foot down firmly on to the brake pedal and hold it there.

Make sure that no one is near the vehicle that could be injured if it moves unexpectedly.

Push down the white plastic shift lock release button and hold it down in place.

Then with your other hand, move the gear selector back from "Park" to "Neutral".

While continuing to hold down the brake pedal with your foot, release the emergency / parking brake and remove the wheel blocks.

Have your assistants carefully manually move the vehicle (or load it on to the tow truck).

Once you are done manually moving the vehicle, move the gear selector forward from "N" and back into "P" (Park).

Gently push the plastic trim ring back down into place over the top of the gear selector assembly.

Carefully pop all of the plastic retaining clips back into place. Make sure that every edge of the plastic trim ring is flush with the top of the gear selector.
