How to change a burnt out reverse light
bulb in the trunk lid of an 8th generation 2018 to 2022 Toyota Camry.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the XV70
eighth generation (2018, 2019 and probably also the 2020, 2021 & 2022 model
years) Toyota Camry sedan in changing a burnt out reverse light bulb in the
housing attached to the trunk lid. Owners of other Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles such as the Avalon, Corolla, Prius, Yaris, Mirai, 86, Sienna, RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, C-HR, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, Hilux, RX 350, IS 250, IS 350, CT 200H, GS 450h, GX 470, LX 470, UX 200, NX 300 and UX 250h may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 921 (also known as W16W). If you would like to have brighter reverse lights, install some 921 LED bulbs. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small plastic pry bar tool. |

Pull Out Plastic Fastener |
Remove 2nd Pop Rivet |
Remove 3rd Pop Rivet |
The first two steps
are to open the trunk lid and then move to the side of the car with the
burnt out reverse light bulb. There are three black plastic pop rivet fasteners on the outer edge of the fabric trunk lid liner. Gently pull up the round center piece of each fastener with the plastic pry bar tool to unlock them. Then pry out the base of the fasteners. |

Pull Back Trunk Liner |
Reverse Bulb Socket |
Set the three pop
rivet fasteners aside in a safe place. Gently pull back the carpeted trunk lid trim cover. Locate the grey plastic reverse (back-up) bulb socket on the back side of the light housing. |

Push In Release Tab |
Slide Out Power Plug |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Push in the release
tab on the electrical connector before sliding it straight out of its
socket. Rotate the base of the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling it straight out of the housing. |

Remove Bulb Socket |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Push In New Light Bulb |
Carefully pull the
old light bulb straight out of the socket. Push a new miniature wedge base number 921 light bulb straight into the socket. (It is also known as part # W16W.) If you would like to have brighter reverse lights, install some compatible replacement 921 LED bulbs. |

Empty Bulb Housing |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push In Power Plug |
Re-insert the bulb
socket into the opening in the rear of the light housing. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure it into place. |

Replace Trunk Lid Cover |
Push In Pop Rivets |
2nd Fastener Replaced |
Push the trunk lid
trim cover back into place. Re-insert the three pop rivets into their holes to secure the trunk lid liner in place. |

3rd Pop Rivet Replaced |
Push In Center - Locked |
Test New Reverse Light |
Push in the center
part of each pop rivet to lock the fasteners in place. To test the new light bulbs, have an assistant step on the brake pedal and shift the transmission into reverse. Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
