This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the "JL" fourth generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023) Jeep Wrangler SUV in changing a weak or dead 12V automotive battery in the engine bay.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) 12V battery is a group size H6 (also known as 48) and the part number is Mopar 56029758AB.

A few other compatible replacement group size H6 (48) 12V batteries with their part numbers are as follows: Odyssey ODP-AGM48 H6, ACDelco Gold 48AGM, Bosch S6585B S6, Interstate Batteries H6 (48) AGM (at Costco) and EverStart Platinum AGM H6 (at Walmart).

If you'd like to have a larger battery with more CCA (cold cranking amps) and RC (reserve capacity), install a compatible Group Size H7 (94R) such as the ACDelco Gold 94RAGM, Deka 9A94R AGM, Motorcraft BAGM94RH7800, EverStart AGM H7 (at Walmart) and Interstate Batteries H7 (94R) AGM.

The tools needed to complete this procedure include a 10mm socket, a set of extension bars and a 1/4" or 3/8" drive ratchet.

The first few steps are to open the hood, move to the left (passenger) side of the engine bay and locate the OEM 12V car battery. The battery is situated behind the engine air filter housing and in front of the electrical fuse and relay panel box.

Warning - Do NOT make contact with both battery posts or terminals at the same time to avoid being electrocuted (shocked) and wear protective gloves along with safety glasses.

Loosen the "-" negative terminal by turning the nut in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. You do not need to remove the nut, just loosen it a few turns.

Next, flip open the red rubber cover on the "+" positive battery terminal.

Carefully pull the positive terminal off the "+" battery post.

Cover the positive terminal with a small towel and tuck it away on the side of the battery.

There is a black plastic battery hold down clamp at the outer edge of the battery tray.

Loosen the single metal bolt on the hold down clamp by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with the 10mm socket, a long extension bar and a 1/4" or 3/8" drive ratchet.

Raise the plastic handles on the old battery and lift it out of the engine bay.

Gently set the old battery on the ground. Try to avoid dropping or tipping over the old battery to help prevent from having acid leak out.

Be sure to take the old battery with you to the auto parts store, Walmart or Costco to avoid having to pay a "core", "disposal" or "recycling" fee.

If you've had a problem with corrosion (white, blue or green powder) building up on the terminals or battery posts, I highly recommend installing some felt anti-corrosion washers over the posts.

Carefully lower the new battery down into the engine bay with the positive post on the rear closer to the windshield and the negative post situated closer to the front by the engine air filter housing.

(On some model years, you may need to remove a plastic tab from the battery tray to fit a larger H7 (94R) battery.)

Lower the hold down clamp into place and spin in the 10mm bolt a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction.

Lower the heat shield cover over the new battery. It should still fit over a larger H7 (94R) battery.

First, push the positive terminal over the "+" battery post.

Try to avoid over tightening the terminal nut to prevent from cracking the battery post which may lead to an acid leak.

Then push the negative terminal over the "-" battery post.

Double check that the terminals are securely attached.

To test the new 12V battery, start the engine and turn on the headlights.

Don't forget to adjust the time on the clock and program your favorite radio stations before you start driving.

Be sure to write down the battery change in your vehicle's service records.
