Check Slot For Debris
Inspect both sides of the old filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, debris, soot, pollen, hair, insects, sand and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a shop vacuum.

Check the filter slot for any large debris such as leaves or dragonflies.

Use the crevice attachment of your shop vacuum to clean out any large debris in the slot.
