This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the "JL" fourth generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023) Jeep Wrangler SUV in checking and cleaning or changing the engine air filter element for the 2.0 liter inline four cylinder GME T4 Hurricane turbocharged engine.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) engine air filter part number is Mopar 68257030AA.

A few other compatible replacement aftermarket engine air filters with their part numbers are as follows: K&N 33-5076, Premium Guard PA99455 and ACDelco Gold A3408C.

The only tool needed to access and replace the engine air filter is a standard Phillips head screwdriver or an 8mm socket with an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the left (passenger) side of the engine bay.

The large black plastic rectangular shaped engine air filter housing is located behind the passenger headlight and just in front of the 12V automotive battery.

The top cover of the engine air filter box is held in place by four Phillips / 8mm hex head screws with one screw at each of the four corners.

Do Not Remove

Removed By Accident
Note - I accidentally removed the screw at the center of the left side. You do not need to remove this screw.

Remove the rear left screw by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with an 8mm socket attached to an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

The four screws located at each corner of the air box are "captured" and will remain attached to the cover.

Then loosen the front right screw, rear right screw and rear left screw by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with the 8mm socket or you could also use a Phillips head or flat head screwdriver.

Clean Out Bottom Half
Inspect both side of the old air filter.

If the old filter is dark gray or black and clogged with dirt, dust, sand, pollen, twigs, leaves, insects, hair, soot and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) engine air filter part number is Mopar 68257030AA.

If you'd prefer to have a washable and reusable filter, I recommend buying the K&N 33-5076 filter.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum.

Check the bottom half of the air box for any sand or large debris and clean it out with the shop vacuum.

Insert the new air filter into the bottom half of the housing with the rubber gasket facing up towards you and the pleated side facing down.

Line up the air box cover and push it down into place.

Tighten the four screw by turning them in the clockwise direction with the 8mm socket, an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug.

Filter Change Complete
Note - Ignore the picture of me replacing the screw at the middle left area of the air box that I mistakenly removed.

Double check that the air box cover is securely installed, flush with the bottom half and with no part of the new filter visible at any edge.

According to the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual for the JL 2020 Jeep Wrangler, the engine air filter element should be inspected and cleaned after driving in sandy or dusty conditions. You should also replace the filter every 30,000 miles or at least every 3 years.

Be sure to write down the filter change in your vehicle's service records.
