This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the "JL" fourth generation (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 & 2023) Jeep Wrangler SUV in changing weak, failing or faulty rear window support struts on the back windshield attached to the tailgate door.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge and RAM vehicles such as the Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Charger, Challenger, Durango, RAM 1500, Promaster, 2500 and 3500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number for the support struts (also known as gas shocks, lift springs or prop rods) is Mopar 68282670AA (853491 0160N 015/20 B 28).

The only tool needed to remove and replace the support struts is a small flat head screwdriver such as from precision screwdriver set.

The first step is to open the rear window and have an assistant hold it open. (I chose to wedge open the window with a large towel.)

Pry Out Bottom Clip
Make sure that your assistant has a firm grasp on the rear window.

Locate the "C" shaped metal retaining clips at the top and bottom of the support strut.

Use a small flat head screwdriver to gently pry out the "C" shaped clip just enough to detach the socket from the metal ball mount.

You do not need to remove the "C" shaped metal retaining clip.

Repeat the process to detach the other side of the support strut.

Attach Top of New Strut
Line up the new support strut with the thin metal bar at the bottom and the thicker gas shock body close to the top by the window.

Use the flat head screwdriver to gently pry back the "C" shaped retaining clip before popping the ball socket on to the ball stud mounting point.

To test the new support strut, carefully open and close the rear window a few times.

Repeat the steps to replace the other support strut if necessary.

Be sure to record the procedure in your vehicle's service records.
