This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation (2018, 2019, 2020 and probably also the 2021, 2022 and 2023 model years) Ford Expedition SUV in checking or changing a blown electrical fuse or a faulty relay in either the engine bay or the interior passenger compartment electrical panels.

Owners of other Ford or Lincoln vehicles such as the Explorer, F-150, Escape, EcoSport, Transit, F-350, F-250, Edge, Flex, Ranger, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Bronco, Super Duty, Navigator, Continental, MKZ, MKX, MKC, MKT, Aviator, Corsair and Nautilus may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The fourth generation Expedition is equipped with new Micro2 and Micro3 style electrical fuses which can be purchased at any auto parts store, possibly at Walmart and online at Amazon.

If the plastic fuse puller tool is missing, you can instead use a pair of needle nose pliers with rubber insulated handles.

The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the left (passenger) side of the engine bay.

The square shaped black plastic fuse box is located behind the 12V automotive battery and in front of the plastic cowl near the windshield.

Push in the two release tabs on the front edge of the cover to release the retaining clips.

Detach the electrical connector and wire loom from the right side of the fuse box cover by pushing in the release tab and sliding it forward.

Lift the cover off the fuse box and set it aside in a safe place.

There is a fuse location diagram in the owner's manual.

Pull Fuse Out of Socket
The plastic fuse puller tool seemed to be missing on this 2018 Expedition MAX, so I instead used a pair of needle nose pliers with rubber insulated handles.

Locate the fuse that you would like to check or change.

Gently grasp the exposed plastic part of the fuse with the pliers and carefully pull it straight out of the fuse block.

Try to avoid squeezing too firmly to prevent from cracking or damaging the old fuse before you get a chance to check its condition.

To check the condition of the old fuse, hold it up to a light bulb.

If the thin metal bar or "strip" in the translucent plastic center of the old fuse appears to be burnt or broken, the old fuse is most likely "blown" and should be replaced with a new one of the same amperage rating.

If the metal band or "wire" in the middle of the old fuse appears to be intact, the fuse might still be in good working condition.

Since new fuses are so inexpensive, it should still be replaced as part of your electrical issue troubleshooting process.

The fourth generation 2018, 2019 and 2020 Expedition are equipped with the newest Micro2 and Micro3 style electrical fuses.

Push a new fuse of the same amperage rating (e.g. 5A, 10A, 15A, 20A or 25 amps) straight into the socket.

If you suspect that a faulty relay is the cause of your problem, the easiest way to check is to simply replace the relay with a new one of the same amperage rating.

You could also test the relay with a digital multimeter tool.

Slide the electrical connector and wire loom back into place on the right side of the fuse box.

You should feel or hear the retaining clip "click" securely into place.

The interior passenger compartment electrical panel is located behind a plastic cover on the right side of the front passenger footwell area.

Re-Insert Tabs Rear Edge
Check the condition of the old fuse by holding it up to a light source.

Push a new fuse of the same amperage rating straight into the socket.

If you would like to add a hard wire 12V power source for an automotive accessory such as a digital gauge, cell phone charger, dash cam, backup camera, radar detector or an LED lighted Uber / Lyft sign, install an "Add-A-Circuit" fuse tap adapter (also known as a piggyback fuse holder).

Use a digital multimeter to find either a "switched" or "hot / live" circuit depending on your needs. A "switched" circuit will be off when the ignition is in the "off" position and only supply 12 volt power when the ignition is in the "on" position. A constant hot / live circuit will always supply 12V power even when the car's ignition is switched off.

To replace the kick panel, first re-insert the tabs on the rear edge (closest to you).

Then push on the front edge (closer to the front of the car) of the kick panel to secure the retaining clip friction fastener.

Test the electrical component that you were having issues with such as the stereo, horn, headlights, tail lights, power driver seat, A/C system, power windows, power door locks, etc.

If you are still having the same problem, there may be a shorted out wire or the component itself needs to be replaced.

Be sure to write down the fuse change in your vehicle's service records.
