This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth generation (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and the updated 2023 model year) Toyota RAV4 SUV in changing a burnt out rear turn signal light bulb located in the tail light housings. (Note - The brake light, parking light and side marker lights are all LED units that should last the life time of the vehicle.)

Owners of other Toyota and Lexus vehicles such as the Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Prius, Avalon, C-HR, GR86, Venza, Sienna, Sequoia, 4Runner, IS 250, IS 300, IS 350, ES 350, GS 350 and GX 460 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement wedge base light bulb part number is 7440A (also known as WY21W or 7440NA).

If you'd like to have brighter rear turn signal lights that will also last much longer before burning out like the traditional incandescent bulbs, install some 7440A LED units.

The tools needed to remove the tail light housing and access the bulb socket include a plastic pry bar tool and a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a 10mm wrench.

The first two steps are to open the tailgate door for the cargo area and move to the side of the vehicle with the burnt out rear turn signal light bulb.

Use the plastic pry bar tool to gently remove the black plastic trim cover on the inner edge of the tail light housing that was hidden by the tailgate door.

Remove Second Bolt
Set the trim cover aside in a safe place.

Loosen the two black metal bolts by turning them in the counterclockwise direction (lefty loosey) with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Loosen Friction Fasteners
Set the two bolts aside in a safe place.

The tail light housing is still held in place by two friction fasteners located on the front outer edge.

Try to pull the housing straight off the rear corner of the SUV.

If you can't remove the housing, very gently and carefully insert a plastic pry bar tool in between the front outer edge of the tail light assembly and the painted metal body panel.

Do NOT use excessive force to prevent from cracking the tail light housing.

If it is very cold outside, wait for a warmer day or move the car into a heated garage. Plastic is much more brittle and prone to breaking in cold temperatures.

Towel - Protect Paint
You may need to remove and very gently reinsert the plastic pry bar tool in several locations to loosen the friction fasteners.

Once you pull the tail light housing off the rear corner of the vehicle, you will see the plastic slot that slides over a white plastic pop rivet button head and the metal peg (or "spike") that is inserted into a white plastic grommet.

Place a towel on the rear bumper to protect the paint and tail light housing lens cover from being scratched.

Pull Out Old Light Bulb
The brake, parking and rear side marker lights are all LED bulbs that should last the life time of the vehicle.

Rotate the gray plastic rear turn turn signal bulb socket 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before removing it from the housing.

Warning - If the old light bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. Allow the old light bulb to cool off before handling it.

Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) light bulb was marked as part number Toshiba 12V21W WY21W.

Install a new number 7440A light bulb straight into the socket.

Clean the new light bulb with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. Any oil or grease left on the new halogen bulb may cause a hot spot and cause it to burn out prematurely.

Reinsert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction.

Spin in the two 10mm bolts a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent them from becoming cross threaded.

Tighten the bolts in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug.

Try to avoid over tightening the bolts to prevent from cracking the plastic inner edge of the housing.

Close Tailgate - Done!
Gently push the black plastic trim cover back into place.

You should feel or hear the retaining clips "click" securely into place.

To test the new rear turn signal light bulbs, activate the hazard signals.

Tip - If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work, try removing it from the socket, rotate it 180 degrees and push it back into the socket. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and will only work when the "+" positive and "-" negative electrical contacts are in the correct orientation.

Close the tailgate to complete the job.

Be sure to write down the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
