This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the sixth generation 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and the revised or "face lifted" 2023 and 2024 Nissan Altima sedan in cleaning or changing the mass air flow (MAF) sensor for the PR25DD 2.5L I4 engine.

Owners of other Nissan, Infiniti or related Renault vehicles such as the Rogue, X-Trail, Note, Versa, Rogue Sport / Qashqai, Maxima, Sentra, Juke, Kicks, Murano, Pathfinder, Armada, Frontier, Titan, Quest, NV200, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX60 and QX80 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

Some of the symptoms of a dirty, failing or faulty MAF sensor include hard starting, rough idling, hesitation, engine surging, poor acceleration, hiccups, low fuel economy (reduced MPG), stalling, loss of power and misfiring.

You might also see a CEL / SES (check engine light / service engine soon warning) on the gauge cluster. If you have an OBDII scanner it may reveal a MAF sensor related DTC (diagnostic trouble code) such as P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103 or P0104.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) MAF sensor was marked as part number Hitachi 22680-6CA0B (or 22680 6CA0B - AFH60M-53 9Z06 M).

Two compatible replacement aftermarket mass air flow sensor with their part numbers are as follows: Herko PMAF939 and PartCatalog PC-849313.

The only tool needed to access and replace the sensor is a standard Phillips head screwdriver.

The first two steps are to open the hood and move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay.

The mass air flow sensor is attached to the top of the black plastic air intake tube on the engine air filter housing.

Push in the release tab on the gray electrical connector before sliding it straight off the top of the old sensor.

Inspect Old Sensor
Set the two screws aside in a safe place.

Carefully slide the old sensor straight out of the air intake tube.

If you'd like to try cleaning the old MAF sensor, use CRC Electronic Cleaner spray to gently rinse off the sensor wire and the electrical contacts.

Allow the sensor to air dry. Do not use compressed air or an air compressor to avoid damaging the sensor wire.

Push the power plug straight on to the top of the new sensor.

You should hear or feel the electrical connector "click" securely into place.

Start the engine and listen closely for any strange sounds that may indicate an issue with the new sensor.

If you have an OBD2 scan tool, clear any MAF sensor related diagnostic trouble codes.

Be sure to record the sensor cleaning or replacement in your vehicle's service records.
