Acura MDX Map
Light Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out map light in
the overhead console of a 1st generation 2001 to 2006 Acura MDX SUV.

Pry Out Front Edge |
This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically created to assist
owners of the first generation (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006)
Acura MDX in changing a burnt out map light bulb in the overhead
console or upgrading them both to brighter LED units. Owners of other Acura or Honda vehicles such as the RDX, ILX, TLX, RLX, TL, CL, RSX, RL, TSX, ZDX, NSX, Integra, Pilot, Accord, Civic, Fit, Clarity, CR-V, CR-Z, HR-V, Odyssey, Element and Ridgeline may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb is part number 2825 (also known as the W5W). You can also use some brighter LED bulbs. The only tool needed to access and replace the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. |

Small Retaining Clip |
Two Tabs - Rear Edge |
Lens Cover Removed |
To prevent from
scratching the plastic lens cover or the light housing, I recommend either
covering the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or
instead use a plastic trim panel removal
tool. Insert the blade of the flathead screwdriver in between the front edge (closest to the windshield) of the lens cover and the overhead housing. Gently pry out the retaining clip. Try to avoid using excessive force. The lens cover should pop out relatively easily. Swing open the front edge of the lens cover and pull out the two tabs on the rear edge from the housing. Set the translucent plastic lens cover aside in a safe place. |

Reflector & Old Bulb |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
Old Light Bulb Removed |
If the old light
bulb was recently turned on, it might still be hot enough to burn your
fingers. Be careful when you remove it. Grasp the old bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket. |

Miniature Wedge Base |
Empty Bulb Socket |
Push In New Light Bulb |
|
||
Push a new
miniature wedge base number
2825 light bulb (which is
also known as the "W5W") straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter map lights, install some compatible 2825 LED bulbs. |
||
"On/Off Button" Test Bulb |
Re-Insert Tabs Rear Edge |
Close Lens Cover |
Push the white
plastic "On/Off" button to test the new light bulb. (If you installed an LED bulb and it doesn't work. Try removing it, rotating it 180 degrees and re-inserting it. Some LED bulbs are "polarized" and can only be installed in one orientation.) Line up the lens cover with the light housing. Re-insert the two small plastic tabs on the rear edge of the lens cover back into the housing. |

Pop In Retaining Clip - Front |
Map Light Bulbs Replaced |
Testing Map Lights |
Swing the lens
cover closed and gently snap in the retaining clip on the front edge.
Test the new map light bulbs by pressing on the indentation near the front of the lens cover to activate the "On/Off" switches. I recommend moving the "On / Door / Off" switch to the "Door" position so that the map lights will turn on when ever a passenger door is opened. Automotive maintenance records fanatics may choose to record the bulb change in your service notes. For more,
