The
Butterfly Rainforest is one of the best attractions in the city of
Gainesville for nature lovers of any age.
This permanent exhibit at the Florida Museum of Natural History showcases hundreds of colorful butterflies, lush rainforest foliage, a few dozen small birds, some koi goldfish, waterfalls, and exotic orchid flowers. The Florida Museum of Natural History and the Butterfly Rainforest are located on the University of Florida campus at the intersection of SW 34th St. and Hull Road next to the Harn Museum of Art. Visitors are welcome in the museum Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and on Sundays from 1 PM to 5 PM. Tickets cost $10.50 for adults, $6 for children (3-17), $9 for Florida residents, and $8 for seniors or college students. |

Parking at the museum costs $4 on weekdays from 8:45 AM to 4:30 PM payable to the parking attendant in the booth. Visitors can park for free during weekends and state holidays. (The signs in the area stated that parking restrictions were lifted at 3:30 PM in the adjacent student parking lot.) | ||
Just a few of the butterfly types and moth species that can be seen in the Butterfly Rainforest include the Angola White Lady, Glasswing, Great Orange Tip, Mosaic, Mother of Pearl, Zebra Swallowtail, White Peacock, Common Birdwing, Cattleheart, Great Eggfly, Longwing, Olivewing, Postman, Shoemaker, Swordtail, Blue Glassy Tiger, Cracker, Rusty Tipped Page, Silver Emperor, Blue Crow, Charaxes, Gold-Banded Forester, Indian Leaf, Morpho, Mexican Bluewing, Tropical Blue Wave, Procilla Beauty, Lacewing, Leafwing, Crimson Patch, Mexican Silverspot, Tigerwing, and Orange Emigrant. | ||
