Pacifica Engine Air Filter Replacement Guide
How to change the engine air filter for
the Pentastar 3.6L V6 in a 2017, 2018 and 2019 Chrysler Pacifica minivan.
2017 Pacifica Air Box |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2017, 2018, 2019 and probably also the 2020 and 2021 model years) Chrysler Pacifica minivan in cleaning or changing the engine air filter element for the Pentastar 3.6 liter V6 motor. Owners of other FCA (Fiat Chrysler America) vehicles from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM or Fiat such as the Town & Country, 300, 200, Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Patriot, RAM 1500, RAM ProMaster City, Fiat 500 and Fiat 124 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. Two compatible replacement engine air filters with their part numbers include the following: Premium Guard PA99209 and K&N 33-5061. The tools needed to access and replace the filter include a 8mm socket with an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet. You could also use a Phillips or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the two fasteners. |

Loosen Second Screw |
Lift Off Air Box Cover |
The first two steps
are to open the hood and then move to the right rear area of the engine bay. The engine air filter housing is located just behind the 12V automotive battery and to the left of the electrical fuse box. Loosen the two bolts on the front edge of the filter cover by turning them in the counterclockwise direction with an 8mm socket, an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet. The screws are "captured" so they will remain attached to the top half of the air box. Gently lift the cover off the air box to access the old filter. |

Old Filter Exposed |
Remove Old Air Filter |
Pull the old air filter straight out of the bottom half of the air box.
Old Filter Removed |
Inspect Both Sides |
Inspect both sides
of the old filter. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, leaves, insects, twigs, hair, pollen and soot, it should be replaced with a new element. I recommend buying the Premium Guard PA99209 engine air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner. |

Clean With Vacuum |

The original "OEM" filter in this 2017 Pacifica was Mopar part number 68214516AA.
Clean Out Air Box |
Install New Air Filter |
If your vacuum has
a crevice attachment for the hose, clean out any sand or other debris in the
bottom half of the air box. Lower the new air filter into the bottom half of the air box. The rubber gasket should be pointing up towards you and the pleats should be facing down into the air box. |
|
Insert Four Tabs Into Slots |
Tighten Left Screw |
There are four
plastic tabs on the rear edge of the air box cover. Slide the tabs into their corresponding slots on the bottom half of the air box. Close the air box cover and make sure the two screws are lined up with their corresponding holes. |
|
Tighten Right Screw |
Engine Filter Replaced |
Tighten the two
screws by turning them in the clockwise direction with the 8mm socket, an
extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet until they are snug. Try to avoid over tightening the two screws to prevent from cracking or damaging the plastic air box housing. Be sure to write down the air filter change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
