This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the revised (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) Dodge Avenger sedan in changing a burnt out overhead dome light bulb above the rear passenger seats.

Owners of other Chrysler Group vehicles with similar map light housings such as the Dart, Challenger, Durango, Charger, Grand Caravan, 200, 300, RAM C/V Tradesman, Jeep Patriot, Compass and Cherokee may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 578, which is available from various manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, PIAA and Eiko.

You may also choose to use a brighter 578 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to replace the bulb is a small flathead screwdriver used to pry out the hinged lens cover.

Swing Open Lens Cover
Grasp Old Light Bulb
Pull Out Old Bulb
The first two steps are to sit in the rear passenger seat and locate the small notch on the right side of the dome light lens cover.

An optional step is to cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth to prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces.

Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in to the notch and gently pry out the right side of the lens cover.

Swing open the hinged lens cover from the right side to the left.

If the old bulb was recently illuminated, be careful since it may be hot enough to burn your fingers.

Grasp the old bulb with your thumb and forefinger before pulling it straight out of the socket.

Swing Cover Closed
Push a new "festoon" or "fuse" style # 578 bulb straight in to the socket.

(Tip - If you are installing an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try flipping it around in the socket.)

Swing the translucent plastic lens cover closed from the left side to the right side.

Lens Cover Replaced
Test New Dome Light Bulb
Gently snap in the plastic tab on the right side of the lens cover in to the housing.

Test the new dome light bulb by opening one of the passenger doors or pressing the "Unlock" button on the key fob.
