This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the updated (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) Dodge Avenger
sedan in cleaning or changing the engine air filter element in the
Chrysler 2.4L I4 GEMA World Engine. Owners of other Chrysler Group vehicles equipped with the 2.4L I4 motor such as the Sebring, 200, Caliber, Journey, Jeep Compass and Patriot may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers are as follows: Fram CA9054, K&N 33-2373, Pentius PABT2044, Wix 49926, Mahle LX 2578, Champ Labs AF7984, ACDelco A2055C, Premium Guard PA5672 and Hastings AF1338. No tools are needed to replace the filter. A wet/dry shop vacuum may be useful for cleaning the existing element or the lower half of the air box. |

Lift Off Top Half Air Box |
Pull Out Old Air Box |
Inspect Both Sides |
The black plastic
engine air box is located on the right side of the engine bay next to the
"integrated power module" fuse panel. Gently pull the two retaining clips on the top half of the air box to release them from the lower half. Raise the top half of the air box away from the lower half to access the old filter. Pull the old air filter straight out of the lower half of the air box. |

Vacuum Old OEM Filter |

Inspect both sides
of the old air filter. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a wet/dry shop vacuum. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, hair, insects, leaves and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I'd recommend buying the Fram CA9054 engine air filter since it has great reviews on Amazon. If you'd rather have a re-usable filter, go with the K&N 33-2373 which can last the life time of the vehicle but will need to be washed and re-oiled every 50,000 miles. |
