This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 1st generation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) Dodge Journey SUV in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the tail gate.

Owners of other Chrysler, Dodge and RAM vehicles with similar license plate light housings such as the Town & Country, 300, 200, Avenger, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan, Ram C/V Tradesman and 1500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement bulb is part number 168 from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko, and PIAA. If necessary, you may also use any other miniature wedge base bulb such as the W5W, 194, 2825 or a compatible LED unit.

The only tool needed to change the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver.

Press Black Release Tab
Pull Out Bulb Housing
Bulb Housing Removed
The first step is to locate the side of the license plate light bulb housing with the small opening.

Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in to the opening and press the black plastic release tab.

Continue holding in the black plastic release tab while pulling down the housing to remove it from the underside of the tail gate.

Pull the entire bulb housing out of the tail gate.

Rotate the base of the light grey bulb socket 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pull it straight out of the housing.

You can test that the new bulb is working properly by pressing the "Unlock" button on the key fob to turn on the license plate lights.

Testing New Light Bulbs
Insert the wires in to the tail gate first and then gently snap in the other side of the housing.

Test the new license plate light bulbs by turning on the headlights or pressing the unlock button on the key fob.
