This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the 1st generation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) Dodge Journey SUV in cleaning or changing the engine air filter element in the Pentastar 3.6 liter V6 motor.

Owners of other Chrysler corporation vehicles equipped with the Pentstar 3.6L V6 engine such as the 200, 300, Town & Country, Dodge Avenger, Challenger, Charger, Durango, Grand Caravan, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Volkswagen Routan, Fiat Freemont, Lancia Voyager, Thema, RAM Cargo Van C/V Tradesman and the RAM 1500 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement filter elements with their part numbers are as follows: Fram CA11170, Hastings AF1523, K&N 33-2470, Wix 49049, AEM 28-20470, Ecogard XA6151 and OEM # AF831.

The only tool required to change the filter is a Phillips head screwdriver.

A wet/dry shop vacuum can also be useful for cleaning the existing filter element and/or the air box.

The engine air filter box is located at the front right (driver side) of the engine bay next to the fuse box.

The top half of the air box is held in place by four Phillips head screws.

Loosen the screws by turning them counter clockwise with a Phillips head screwdriver. The screws may remain attached to the top half of the air filter box.

Lift up the top half of the air box and pull out the old filter element.

Install New Engine Filter
Inspect both sides of the old air filter.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and clean out any fine dust with the wet/dry shop vacuum.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, hair, insects, leaves, and twigs, it should be replaced with a new filter element.

I recommend buying the Fram CA11170 engine air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

If you'd prefer to have a re-usable filter, go with the K&N 33-2470 filter which will last the life time of the SUV. It will need to be washed and re-oiled every 50,000 miles.

Clean out the bottom half of the engine air box with the wet/dry shop vacuum to remove any sand or other debris.

Install the cleaned or new engine filter in to the air box with the pleats facing down and the wire mesh screen facing up towards you.

Push the top half of the air box back in to place and tighten the four Phillips head screws by turning them clockwise.

Make sure that the two halves of the air box are flush together with no part of the air filter visible.
