During a
visit to Long Island for a family event, we enjoyed a traditional
Chinese meal at a restaurant in Flushing Chinatown, which is located
in the Queens Borough of New York City.
I'm not sure exactly what the local residents define as being "Flushing Chinatown". We just walked around on Prince Street, Roosevelt Ave, Main St. and 39th Avenue. From what I could tell, every variety of Chinese cuinine was represented in this area including Northern (Beijing & Shandong), Southern, Sichuan, Canton, Jiangsu, Hunan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwanese and Anhui. Luckily, we had a Chinese person in our group who served as our guide and translator during our visit to Flushing Chinatown. She chose the "South North Harmony" restaurant at 135-25A 40th Road, Flushing, NY 11354. |

The South North Harmony Restaurant was still serving their Taiwanese breakfast when we arrived but the group consensus was that we would order off the lunch menu. There was a "Family Meal" option that came with your choice of three dishes, rice and soup for $21.95. Any one item on the menu was an additional $7.95.

Some of the delicious dishes on the menu included steamed meat buns, shredded beef with hot green pepper, beef baby back ribs with black pepper sauce, pork chops, pork rib Peking style, chunk chicken Taiwan style, duck blood with ginger scallions, Chinese ham with garlic greens, Szechuan style pork intestines, clam with basil, roast pork with fried tofu, slice fish with black bean sauce, squid with Chinese celery, shrimp with green peas, dry bean curds, and okya with tofu.

On our next visit to New York, I'd like to visit the Manhattan Chinatown and also the Brooklyn Chinatown to see how they compare to the Flushing Chinatown. I've also read about the smaller Chinatowns in Rego Park, Elmhurst and Marine Park.
