3rd Brake Light
Rear Deck - Bulbs Housing
Phillips Head Screw
This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 2nd generation 1998-2011 Ford Crown Victoria in replacing a burnt out high mount third brake light bulb in the housing on the rear deck.

Owner's of other related "Panther" platform Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicles such as the Grand Marquis, Marauder, and Town Car, may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement high mount stop light bulb is part # 912 available from manufacturers such as Sylvania, PIAA, GE, Philips, and Putco.

If you would like to have a brighter third brake light, replace both bulbs with compatible 912 LED bulbs.

The only tool needed to access the two high mount 3rd brake light bulbs is a standard sized Phillips head screwdriver.

Remove Right Screw
Remove Left Side Screw
Lift Up Light Housing
To access the two third brake light bulbs, move to the rear passenger area and loosen the two Phillips head screws that hold the housing in place on the rear deck.

Set the two screws aside in a safe place and pull the 3rd brake light housing away from the rear windshield.

Turn Upside Down
Squeeze Two Release Clips
Pull Out Bulb Bracket
Turn the housing upside down and squeeze together the two curved release clips located near the center by the power wire.

Pull the bulb bracket straight out of the underside of the housing.

Pull Out Old # 912 Bulbs
Replace Bulbs Bracket
Snap Bracket In Place
Pull the burnt out # 912 bulbs straight out of their sockets and push in new # 912 bulbs.

You could also install brighter 912 LED bulbs.

Place the bracket back into the underside of the housing and push it in until it snaps into place.

Test New 3rd Brake Bulbs
Replace Bulb Housing
Tighten 2 Phillips Screws
Test the new high mount stop lamp by having someone step on the brake pedal.

Line up the bulb housing back in place on the rear deck and thread in the two Phillips head screws by hand a few turns. Then tighten the screws with the Phillips head screwdriver.
