This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 Ford EcoSport compact SUV in changing the rear disc brake pads and lubricating the caliper slider pins. Plus directions for replacing the rotors if necessary. Owners of other Ford or Lincoln vehicles such as the Fiesta, B-Max, Escape, Edge, Bronco Sport, Explorer, Expedition, Transit, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Puma, Kuga, Endura, Everest, Ka, Figo, Endeavour, Aviator, Corsair, Nautilus and Navigator may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement sets of new rear brake pads for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 EcoSport with their part numbers include the following: Centric 103.10950, Akebono EUR1095 and Power Stop Z23-1095. Please verify the correct part numbers for your SUV by using the Amazon Part Finder website. The correct brake pads may vary depending on the model year, trim level, transmission type (FWD - front wheel drive or AWD - all wheel drive) and the region of the world where the vehicle was manufactured. The tools and other items needed to complete this procedure include a lug nut wrench, a floor jack, two jack stands, a large flat head screwdriver, a 7mm hex head socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet or a 7mm Allen key wrench, a Lisle 28600 disc brake piston tool or a pair of needle nose pliers and a tube of brake caliper grease. The first few steps are to drive the SUV on to a level surface, shift the transmission into "Park" and turn off the ignition. Make sure that the emergency / parking brake is released. If the parking brake is set, you will not be able to pull the rear caliper out of the bracket and off the old pads. Place wheel chocks on both sides of the front tires to prevent the vehicle from moving. Attention: This 2020 EcoSport is equipped with the manual hand lever cable operated parking brake. If your SUV has the EPB (electric or electronic parking brake), you'll need to place the EPB into "service" or "maintenance" mode. This will retract the EPB motors so that you can replace the rear brake pads as usual. If your EcoSport has the EPB system, check out my Ford Edge Rear Brake Pads Replacement Guide for the procedure to place the EPB into service mode. Slightly loosen the four lug nuts on the rear wheel by turning them about 1/4 to 1/2 turn in the counterclockwise direction. Carefully raise the rear of the SUV with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands. I didn't see the option to place the jack stands under the frame rail like I would normally do, so I carefully placed them under the pinch weld and left the floor jack supporting the vehicle's weight. |

Spin Off Four Lug Nuts |
4 Lug Nuts Removed |
Rotor, Bracket, Caliper |
Spin off the four
lug nuts in the counterclockwise direction. Set the lug nuts aside in a safe place. Carefully remove the rear wheel and tire to reveal the rotor, bracket, caliper and suspension. |
||
Rear Brake Caliper |
Pry Out Plastic Cap |
Dust Cover Removed |
The rear brake
caliper is attached to the bracket on top of the rotor by two bolts situated
on the back side. Use the flat head screwdriver to pry out the round plastic dust caps on the rubber boots. |
||
Remove Second Cap |
Pry Off Spring Clip |
Caliper Anti-Rattle Clip |
Set the two black
plastic caps aside in a safe place. For the next step, I recommend putting on safety glasses and wearing gloves. Use the large flat head screwdriver to carefully pry the anti-rattle spring clip off the outer face of the caliper. With your other hand, hold the spring clip to make sure it doesn't fly off and hit you in the face. |
||
Two Caps & Spring Clip |
Loosen Rear Caliper Bolt |
Loosen Front Caliper Bolt |
Set the anti-rattle
caliper retaining clip aside with the two black plastic caps. Loosen the caliper bolt situated closer to the rear of the vehicle by turning it in the clockwise direction (as seen from the outside of the vehicle) with the 7mm Allen key (hex wrench) or a 7mm hex head socket. Note: If you slide under the cargo area of the SUV and look at the back of the caliper, you would loosen the caliper bolts in the normal counterclockwise (lefty-loosey) direction. Since we are looking at the outer face of the caliper in these pictures, the direction to loosen the bolts is reversed. Then loosen the caliper bolt located closer to the front of the SUV by turning it in the clockwise direction (when viewed from the outside of the vehicle as shown in these pictures) with the 7mm hex head socket and a ratchet or a 7mm Allen wrench. |
||
Spin Out Front Bolt / Pin |
Front Bolt / Slider Pin |
Remove Rear Bolt / Pin |
Continue spinning
out the two combination caliper bolts / slider pins. Set the two bolts / pins aside in a safe place. |
||
Lift Caliper Off Bracket |
Rest Caliper Suspension |
Remove Old Outer Pad |
Carefully lift the
caliper out of the bracket and off the old pads. Gently rest the caliper on the suspension. Try to avoid stressing, pulling, kinking or bending the rubber brake fluid hose. Pull the old inner and outer (or "inboard" and "outboard") brake pads out of the bracket. |
||
Remove Old Inner Pad |
Wear Bar Front Inner Pad |
Disc Brake Piston Tool |
Make a note of
where the wear indicator bar or "squeal bar" is situated on the old brake
pads. On this 2020 EcoSport Titanium, the wear indicator bar was located at the front of the inner brake pad. If you have a disc brake piston tool like the Lisle 28600, test fit the various sides to see which side has the best grip on the caliper's piston. |
||
Or Needle Nose Pliers |
Install New Inner Pad |
Install New Outer Pad |
If you don't have a
disc brake piston tool, you could instead use a pair of needle nose pliers
to turn back the caliper piston. To retract the screw-in type rear caliper piston, slowly rotate it in the clockwise direction. If you see the piston moving out of the caliper, STOP and make sure you are rotating it in the correction direction. Continue retracting the piston until it is just about flush with the rubber dust boot that surrounds it. If you have trouble turning back the piston, try applying some force or taking off the cap on the brake reservoir tank located in the engine bay. If your EcoSport has been exhibiting shuddering or vibrations in the rear end while braking, you might need to replace the old warped or worn out rotors. Two compatible replacement aftermarket rotors with their part numbers are as follows: Power Stop AR85192EVC and Raybestos 682429FZN. Note - The compatible replacement rotors may vary depending on whether your SUV has the FWD (front wheel drive) or AWD (all wheel drive) transmission. Please verify the correct part numbers before buying new rotors. To replace the rotors, remove the two 13mm bolts on the back side of the bracket and detach the bracket. (The caliper bracket is also known as the "brake caliper anchor plate" or the "torque member"). Carefully slide the old rotor off the lug studs. Clean off the lug studs and wheel hub with brake parts cleaner spray. Slide the new rotor over the lug studs. Re-attach the caliper bracket by replacing the two 13mm bolts. I don't have the service manual for the EcoSport but I checked the service manuals for the related C-Max, Focus, Fiesta and Escape vehicles which share most of the same brake components. The service manuals for the Escape and Fiesta list the torque specification for tightening the 13mm rear bracket bolts with a torque wrench as 46 lb-ft (or 63 N-m). The Ford Focus has a slightly different specification of 52 lb-ft (or 70 N-m). One of the service manuals specified that the bracket bolts should be replaced and not re-used. So they might be TTY (torque-to-yield) bolts. Please verify this torque specification for your specific vehicle since it might vary depending on the model year or trim level. Apply some brake parts lubricant grease to the caliper bracket where it will come into contact with the new pads. Do not get any grease on the friction surface of the new pads or on the rotor. Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket. The wear indicator bar should be situated at the front of the inner brake pad. |
||
Push Pads Against Rotor |
Lower Caliper Over Pads |
Lubricate Slider Pins |
Push the two pads
together until they are flush against the rotor. Carefully lower the caliper over the pads and into the bracket. In order for the caliper to operate smoothly, the two caliper slider pins need to be well lubricated. Apply a thin layer of caliper grease to the slider pins. |
||
Spin In Rear Bolt / Pin |
Replace Front Bolt / Pin |
Tighten Counterclockwise |
Spin in the two caliper bolts / slider pins a few turns by hand in the counterclockwise direction (as seen from the outside of the vehicle) to help prevent them from becoming cross threaded. | ||
Tighten Rear Bolt |
Torque To Specification |
<----- Tighten CC |
The service manual specification for the Focus, Escape and C-Max for tightening the 7mm hex head caliper bolts / slider pins is 21 lb-ft (or 28 N-m) of torque. It would be best to use a torque wrench to tighten the caliper bolts. If you don't have a torque wrench, make sure the caliper bolts are snug. If you have a torque wrench, tighten the two caliper bolts to the service manual specification of 21 lb-ft (28 N-m). Make sure the caliper bolts and bracket bolts are tight before moving on to the next steps. |
||
Line Up Plastic Cap |
Pop Cap In Rubber Boot |
Line Up Anti-Rattle Clip |
Push the plastic
caps back into the rubber dust boots for the caliper bolts / slider pins. Line up the anti-rattle spring clip with the outer face of the caliper. |
||
Insert Bars Into Holes |
Anti-Rattle Clip Secured |
Rubber Valve Cap |
Carefully re-attach
the anti-rattle spring clip to the caliper. Make sure the bar ends are fully inserted into the holes in the caliper. Double check that the spring clip is securely attached to the caliper. If your brake pedal has been feeling soft or spongy, the brake fluid may contain a air bubbles or some moisture. It would be a good idea to bleed the brake lines and flush out the old fluid with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. I highly recommend using the Allstar Performance Bleeder Bottle to bleed the brake lines. It makes the procedure a very easy one-person job compared to having an assistant repeatedly pump the brake pedal. The brake fluid bleeder valve is located on the back side of the caliper just below the top bolt. To open and close the rear brake bleeder valves on this 2020 EcoSport, you'll need a 10mm wrench. (The front bleeder screws are 8mm.) In general, the brake line bleeding order for most vehicles is to start at the caliper furthest from the brake fluid reservoir and work your way to the closest caliper. So the order most likely should be as follows: right rear, right left, front right and front left. The torque specification in the Focus, Escape and C-Max shop manuals for tightening the bleeder valves is about 79.65 in-lb or 9 N-m. Try to avoid over tightening the bleeder valves to prevent from stripping the threads or breaking them. |

Replace Rear Wheel |
Slightly Tighten Lug Nuts |
Carefully replace
the rear wheel. Spin on the four lug nuts a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to help prevent them from becoming cross threaded. Slightly tighten the lug nuts in a criss-cross or star pattern with the lug nut wrench. This is easier to accomplish with five lug nuts, but do your best to progressively tighten the four lug nuts. |
||
Lower Car From Stands |
Torque Lug Nuts |
Rear Brake Job Done |
Carefully lower the
car from the jack stands by using the floor jack. Use a torque wrench to continue tightening the lug nuts to the owner's manual specification of 100 lb-ft (or 135 N-m). Sit in the driver's seat and firmly press the brake pedal a few times to help restore the brake line pressure. Check the brake fluid in the reservoir and verify that it is at the proper level. If it is low, add some fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. To break in your new rear brake pads, just drive normally for the first few hundred miles while trying to avoid any hard or "panic" stops which might glaze over the new pads and cause them to be noisy and/or not perform as well. It's also a good idea to regularly check your driveway for drops of brake fluid which might indicate a leak, check the brake fluid level in the reservoir, and also verify that the lug nuts are still tight. Be sure to record the brake pad change in your vehicle's service records. For more,
