Interior Door Panel Removal Guide
How to take off the plastic interior door
panels in a 2009 to 2019 Ford Flex in order to upgrade the speakers.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the
first generation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019) Ford
Flex crossover SUV in removing the plastic interior door panels in order to
upgrade the OEM door speakers, add soundproofing material, fix a faulty
electrical switch or replace a broken power window motor or regulator. Owners of other Ford or Lincoln vehicle such as the Explorer, Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, C-Max, Mustang, Taurus, EcoSport, Escape, Edge, Expedition, Transit Connect, F-150, Ranger, MKZ, MKC, Navigator, MKX and Continental may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a plastic pry bar tool, a flathead screwdriver, a 10mm socket with a short extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet and a Phillips head screwdriver. In order to remove the OEM door speaker, you'll need a 1/4" socket and an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet. |

The first two steps
are to lower the power window all the way down and fully open the door. Move to the chrome silver door opener handle near the power door lock button. Gently pry out the black plastic trim piece located behind the door opener handle with a plastic pry bar tool. Set the trim piece aside in a safe place. Once the trim piece is out of the way, you'll be able to see a silver bolt head. Next, move to the middle of the armrest by the door pull handle. |

Pry out the
rectangular shaped trim cover located at the middle of the armrest below the
door pull handle. There are two notches on the top edge of the cover. You may need to pry at both notches to remove the cover. Set the cover aside in a safe place. Move to the outer edge of the door panel and locate the red plastic reflector. |

Loosen Counterclockwise |
Silver Bolt Removed |
Gently pry out the
top edge of the red plastic reflector and set it aside in a safe place. Remove silver metal bolt located behind the door opener handle by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with a 10mm socket, an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet. Set the bolt aside with its trim cover. |

Outer Edge Screw |
Remove the bolt in
the middle of the armrest by turning it in the counterclockwise direction
with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. Set the black metal bolt aside with the armrest trim cover. Remove the screw on the outer edge of the door panel that was hidden by the red plastic reflector by turning it in the counterclockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver. Set the screw aside with the red plastic reflector. |

Remove Counterclockwise |
Remove the screw that has a rubber bumper attached to it at the outer middle area of the door panel in the counterclockwise direction. | ||

Inner Edge Screws |
Remove the two
Phillips head screws on the bottom edge of the door panel in the
counterclockwise direction. Remove the two screws on the inner edge of the door panel. |

Lift Off Door Frame |
Set the five
Phillips head screws aside with the other fasteners. At this point, you should have removed three plastic pieces, two bolts and six Phillips head screws. Carefully lift the door panel off the top edge of the metal door frame. You will still need to disconnect the pop rivet behind the triangular shaped sail panel at the top inner corner. |

Gently pull out the
sail panel at the top inner corner of the door panel and release the pop
rivet friction fastener. Tilt the top edge of the door panel towards yourself. |

Squeeze Blue Prongs |

Lift Out Metal Cylinder |
There are two
prongs on the blue plastic collar near the end of the cable for the door
opener handle mechanism. Squeeze the two prongs or "barbs" together with some needle nose pliers. Pull the blue plastic collar out of the bracket and swing out the metal cable. Lift the metal cylinder at the end of the cable out of its socket in the rear of the door opener handle. |

On this front
passenger door panel, there are two electrical connectors. Push in the release tab on small black plastic power plug for the door lock switch before pulling it straight out of its socket. Push in the release button on the white plastic connector for the switch panel before sliding it out of its socket. Set the plastic door panel aside in a safe place. |

Line Up Two Lower Hooks |
The OEM front door
speaker is located at the bottom inner corner of the metal door frame. The OEM speaker can be replaced with aftermarket car speakers in the following sizes: 5 1/4" (5.25"), 5" x 7" and 6" x 8". To remove the old speaker, loosen the four screws in the counterclockwise direction with a 1/4" socket and a ratchet. I highly recommend applying some Dynamat sound deadener to the metal door frame and the back side of the plastic door panel to help prevent rattles and vibrations when you crank up the volume. To replace the plastic door panel, hold it near the door frame and tilt the top edge towards yourself. Lower the two black plastic hooks at the bottom of the door panel on to the bottom of the frame for support. |

Replace the small
black plastic electrical connector by pushing it into the socket. It should
click securely into place. Push the grey plastic power plug straight into its socket. Lower the metal cylinder at the end of the door opener cable into its socket. |

Sail Panel Pop Rivet |
Pull Out Door Lock Stalk |
Push the blue
plastic collar into the bracket until the two prongs pop into place. Line up the pop rivet fastener behind the sail panel at the top inner corner of the door panel with the hole in the metal door frame near the side view mirror. Pull the door lock stalk through the hole at the top outer corner of the door panel. Push the sail panel pop rivet into place. |

Replace Top Inner Screw |
Inner Middle Screw |
Lower the top of
the door panel on to the upper lip of the metal door frame. Replace the two screws on the inner edge of the door panel by turning them in the clockwise direction with a Phillips head screwdriver. |

Bottom Outer Screw |
Replace the two
screws on the bottom edge of the door panel. Replace the screw with the rubber bump to the bottom outer corner of the door panel. |

Top Outer Edge Screw |
Red Plastic Reflector |
Gently Pop In Reflector |
Replace the screw
on the outer edge of the door panel. Gently push the red plastic reflector back into place. |

Black Armrest Bolt |
Tighten Clockwise |
Armrest Bolt Cover |
Replace the black metal bolt into the middle of the armrest by turning it in the clockwise direction with a 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. | ||

Tighten Clockwise |
Push the trim cover
back into place. Replace the silver bolt behind the door opener handle by turning it in the clockwise direction with the 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet. |

Door Panel Replaced |
Pop the plastic
trim piece back into place behind the door opener handle. Sit inside the vehicle, close the door and verify that the door opener handle, power door lock switch, power window switch, door lock stalk and door speaker are all working properly.
