2012 Equinox License Light
Pry Out Light Housing
Removing Bulb Housing
This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) GM Chevy Equinox in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb or upgrading them both to brighter LED units.

Owners of other GM vehicles such as the Spark, Sonic, Cruze, Volt, Malibu, Impala, Camaro, Corvette, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Avalanche, Silverado, Verano, Encore, Regal, LaCrosse, Encore, Enclave, Canyon, Sierra, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Savana, ATS, XTS, CTS, SRX and Escalade may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement light bulb is part # 2825 or W5W from manufacturers such as Sylvania, GE, Eiko, Putco, Recon and PIAA. You could also use the 168, 194 or an LED.

The only tool needed to access the bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Housing Removed
1/4 Turn Counter Clockwise
Bulb Socket Removed
Insert the blade of the small flathead screwdriver in between the license plate light housing and the underside of the trunk lid.

Gently pry out the light housing at the side closest to the center line of the vehicle. I was able to pry it out on the other side although it looks like it would have been easier to pry at the other edge.

Pull the housing out of the underside of the trunk lid.

Rotate the light bulb socket 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pull it straight out of the housing.

Old W5W 12V 5W Bulb
Insert New Bulb
1/4 Turn Clockwise
Pull the old 12 volt 5 watt 2825 bulb straight out of the socket and push in a new 2825 or W5W bulb.

If necessary, you can also use any other miniature wedge base bulbs such as the 168, 158, 194 or an LED.

Insert the new bulb and socket back in to the housing before rotating it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.

Re-Insert Bulb Housing
Pop Housing In Place
Test New License Bulb
Insert the outer edge of the housing in first and then snap in the retaining clip at the other edge.

Test the new license plate light bulbs by turning on the headlights.

Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
