This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010)
Honda Odyssey minivan in changing a burnt out license plate light
bulb in the tailgate or upgrading them both to brighter LED units. Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Civic, Crosstour, CR-V, CR-Z, HR-V, Fit, Element, Insight, Pilot, Ridgeline, Clarity, Crosstour, Elysion, ILX, TSX, TLX, TL, RLX, RDX, NSX and MDX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825 (also known as W5W). If you would like to have brighter license plate lights, you can install some compatible 2825 LED units. No tools are required to access and replace the light bulbs although a plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver might be useful for removing a stubborn light housing. |

Push To The Right |
Use Flathead Screwdriver |
Passenger Side Housing |
The procedure for
removing the driver side or the passenger side license plate light housings
are both the same. If you look closely at the light housings, you'll see the word "Remove" with an arrow pointing to the right (passenger side) printed on the left side. Either use your finger, a plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver to push the left side of the housing towards the right. Gently pry out the left side of the housing. |
||
Remove From Tailgate |
Squeeze Two Tabs |
Pull Off Lens Cover |
Try to avoid using
excessive force. The light housings should pop out relatively easily. Gently remove the light housing from the underside of the tailgate door. Squeeze together the two grey plastic tabs on the rear of the light housing to release the translucent plastic lens cover. Pull the lens cover off and set it aside in a safe place. |

If the old light
bulb was recently turned on, be careful when you remove it. It might still
be hot enough to burn your fingers. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |
||
Push In New Light Bulb |
Snap On Lens Cover |
Re-Insert Left Side First |
Push a new number
2825 miniature wedge base light
bulb straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter license plate lights, install some compatible 2825 LED bulbs. Push the lens cover back on to the bulb housing until it clicks securely into place. First, re-insert the left side of the light housing into the underside of the tailgate. |
||
Pop In Clip - Right Side |
Light Housing Secured |
Test New Light Bulb |
Then gently snap in
the retaining clip on the right side of the light housing. Double check that the light housing is securely in place. To test the new light bulbs, turn on the headlights or the parking lights or press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to activate the exterior lights. Be sure to record the bulb change in your minivan's service records. For more, check out all of my
