2020 QX60 Gear Selector
Front of Trim Cover
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020) Infiniti QX60 luxury SUV in releasing the automatic transmission's shift lock mechanism in order to change the gear selector from "Park" to "Neutral" and manually move a disabled vehicle due to running out of gasoline, a weak or dead 12V battery or needing to be towed for some other mechanical issue.

Owners of other Infiniti and Nissan vehicles such as the JX35, Q50, Q60, QX50, QX80, Pathfinder, Murano, Rogue, Armada, Kicks, Frontier, Titan, NV, NV200, 370Z, GT-R, Leaf, Maxima, Altima, Sentra and Versa might also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The only tool required to complete this procedure is a small flat head screwdriver such as from a Jeweler's Screwdriver Set.

The first two steps are to engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the tires to help prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly.

Locate the small black plastic cover on the front left corner of the gear selector's trim panel next to the letters "P" and "R".

Pry Out Plastic Plug

There is a small notch on the left side of the cover.

Insert the blade of the small flat head screwdriver into the notch and gently pry out the access cover.

Shift Lock Release Button
Set the small plastic access cover aside in a safe place.

Look into the opening and you'll see the shift lock release switch.

Push Down Button
Use Coat Hanger Bar
Place your foot on the brake pedal and hold it down to make sure the vehicle doesn't move unexpectedly.

Insert the screwdriver into the opening and push down the shift lock release button.

While holding down the release button with one hand, use your other hand to move the gear selector back from "P" (Park) to "N" (Neutral).

Push Back To Neutral
Replace Trim Cover
Have your assistants carefully push the vehicle into the desired position.

Keep your foot over the brake pedal just in case you have to stop the vehicle.

Once you are done manually moving the vehicle, move the gear selector back into "Park".

Push the plastic trim cover back into the opening.
