Two License Plate Lights
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the fifth generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and probably also the refreshed 2018 model year) Jeep Cherokee in changing a burnt out license plate light bulb in the tailgate cargo area door or upgrading them both to brighter LED units.

Owners of other Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and RAM vehicles such as the Compass, Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Patriot, 500, Town & Country, 200, 300, Pacifica, Challenger, Charger, Dart, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan, RAM 1500, C/V Tradesman and ProMaster Van may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The compatible replacement miniature wedge base light bulb part number is 2825.

You can also use brighter 2825 LED units.

The only tool needed to access and replace the light bulbs is a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool.

Left Side Light Housing
Push In Tab - Release Clip
The first step is to open the tailgate door.

Insert the blade of a small flathead screwdriver or the plastic pry bar tool in to the opening on the inner edge of the license plate light bulb housing.

Gently push in the tab to release the retaining clip.

Light Housing Removed
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise
Pull the housing out of the tailgate door.

Rotate the grey plastic bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before removing it from the housing.

Bulb Socket Removed
Pull Out Old Light Bulb
Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket.

Old # W5W Bulb Removed
Push In New # 2825 Bulb
The OEM light bulb was a W5W which is the same as the 2825.

Push a new # 2825 light bulb straight in to the socket.

You can also use a brighter LED unit.

Re-Insert Bulb Socket
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock
Re-insert the bulb socket in to the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place.
Re-Insert Wires First
Pop In Retaining Clip
Re-insert the wires first and then the outer edge of the light housing in to the opening in the tailgate.

Gently snap in the retaining clip on the inner edge of the housing.

Light Housing Re-Installed
Test New Light Bulbs
To test the new license plate light bulbs, either turn on the headlights or press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to activate the lights.
