This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 4th generation "JK" 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Jeep Wrangler in replacing a burnt out rear cargo area light bulb or installing a brighter LED bulb.

Owners of previous generation Wrangler vehicles such as the YJ (1987-1995), TJ (1997-2006) or other Jeep vehicles such as the Compass, Patriot, Liberty and Grand Cherokee may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A replacement cargo area light bulb is part # 578 from various manufacturers such as GE, Eiko, Sylvania, ACDelco, Putco and Recon.

You can also use a brighter 578 LED bulb.

The only tool needed to replace the bulb is a small flathead screwdriver.

Use the blade of the screwdriver to gently pry out the translucent plastic lens cover.

The best place to pry out the translucent lens cover is on the right side of the light near the On/Off button.

Once you pry out the right side of the lens cover, swing it out over to the left side and remove it from the housing.

Don't worry if the cargo area light housing comes out when you pull off the lens cover.

It can easily be snapped back into place later.

Grasp the old festoon or "fuse" type light bulb with your thumb and forefinger to pull it straight out of the socket.

Re-Insert Bulb Housing
Push a new # 578 light bulb straight into the socket and press the On/Off button to test it.

If you are installing an LED bulb and it doesn't work at first, try flipping it around in the socket.

Re-insert the hook on the left side of the translucent lens cover first, swing the right side over to close it and gently snap it back into place.
